Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (May 18th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Thursday’s events:

Varsity Softball: Marathon vs. Richfield Springs (1st Round of Sectionals)

The 8th-seeded Marathon Lady Olympians defeated 9th-seeded Richfield Springs in the first round of the Section IV Class D sectional tournament Thursday afternoon. 

Marathon won the game with a score of 5-3. 

Marathon was mainly led by Ellery Ensign (1 run, 1 hit & 2 RBI’s), Izabella Conklin (1 run, 1 hit & 4 strikeouts thrown), Marissa Allen (1 run & 2 hits), Audrey Jasper (1 run & 1 hit), Cassandra Forrest (2 hits & 1 RBI), Melodie Sutton (2 hits & 1 RBI), Haylee Chrysler (1 run), and Delaney Reilly (1 hit).

Note: stats for Richfield Springs were not made available by the time this article was written. 

Up next, Marathon will play in the quarter final stage of the sectional tournament against top-seeded Deposit-Hancock on the road this upcoming Tuesday (May 23rd) at 4:30 p.m.

Varsity Softball: Homer vs. Mexico

The Homer Lady Trojans celebrated senior night with a 20-10 win over Mexico Thursday evening. 

A total of six Homer seniors (Catherine Apker, Melina Hage, Jenna Henderson, Karigan Quaile, Cecelia Rappleyea & Lyla Read) were celebrated at Thursday’s game. 

“These seniors have supported each other and the team through the ups and downs of our season,” said Homer head coach Christine Colasurdo. “They demonstrated the leadership and desire to keep going forward. We appreciate all the hard work they continue to do for the team.”

Throughout the game, Homer was led by Karigan Quaile (2 homeruns, 4 total runs, 3 hits & 5 RBI’s), Catherine Apker (1 homerun, 4 total runs, 3 hits & 2 RBI’s), Cecelia Rappleyea (1 homerun, 3 total runs, 2 hits & 3 RBI’s), Jenna Henderson (1 run, 1 hit, 1 RBI & 6 strikeouts thrown), Melina Hage (1 homerun, 3 total runs, 3 hits & 3 RBI’s), Alexandria Kellaway (3 runs & 3 hits), Allyson Verfuss (1 run, 1 hit & 2 RBI’s), Lyla Read (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), and Kaylee Darling (1 hit & 1 RBI). 

Mexico was led by Kylee Urqhart (3 runs, 1 hit & 2 RBI’s), Hailey Comstock (1 run, 2 hits, 3 RBI’s & s strikeouts thrown), Olivia Killam (1 run, 2 hits, 1 RBI & 2 strikeouts thrown), Emilie Stanard (1 run, 1 hit & 2 RBI’s), Brooke Marks (2 hits & 2 RBI’s), Kacee Killam (2 runs & 1 hit), Journey Girard (1 run), and Makenna Hackett (1 run).  

With this win, Homer ended their regular season with an overall record of 6-11. According to the Section III website, there will be a seeding meeting on Sunday, May 21st, 2023.

Varsity Baseball: Cortland vs. Fulton (Double-Header)

The Cortland Purple Tigers played their last two games of the regular season in a double-header against Fulton at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex Thursday evening. 

Cortland won both games to improve to a 13-6 record.

Cortland won the first game of the double-header with a score of 8-0. 

Cortland was led by Caden Albright (1 run, 2 hits & 3 RBI’s), Ethan Johnson (1 run, 2 hits & 1 RBI), Danny Jackson (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Matteo Rabusin (1 run & 1 hit), Tyler Gilbert (1 run & 1 hit), Evan Shank (1 run & 1 hit), Christopher Yang (1 run & 1 hit), Robbie Atkins (1 RBI), Andrew Partigianoni (1 hit), and Luke Rogoff (1 run & 4 strikeouts thrown).

Fulton was led by Trent Farrands (1 hit), Mathew Brown (1 hit), Brock Tetro (1 hit), Robert Briggs (1 hit), Dylan Sullivan (3 strikeouts thrown), and Jarrett Austin (1 strikeout thrown).

Cortland won the second game of the double-header with a score of 13-1.

Cortland was led by Cal Albright (2 runs, 1 hit & 3 RBI’s), Luke Rogoff (1 run, 3 hits & 2 RBI’s), Christopher Yang (1 run, 2 hits & 1 RBI), Ethan Johnson (1 run & 1 RBI & 8 strikeouts thrown), Caden Albright (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Austin Cotterill (1 run & 1 hit), Owen Johnson (1 run & 1 RBI), Andrew Partigianoni (1 hit & 1 RBI), Danny Jackson (1 run & 1 hit), Rowan Dankert (1 run), Liam Woodard (1 run), and Tyler Gilbert (1 RBI).

Fulton was led by Sam Cotton (1 run & 1 hit), William Patterson V (2 hits & 1 RBI), Kash Stuber (2 hits), Brock Tetro (2 strikeouts thrown), and Cameron Shutts (1 strikeout thrown). 

The Purple Tigers will now wait to see who they will be playing in their first sectional tournament game. According to the Section III website, there will be a seeding meeting on Sunday, May 21st, 2023.

The Homer Trojans won 5-1 against Mexico at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex Thursday afternoon. With this win, Homer improved to a 10-7 overall record.

A standout from the game was Mitchell Earle, who threw a total of 16 strikeouts and only gave up one hit in the entire game. 

“He (Mitchell Earle) has been a workhorse all year,” said Homer head coach Robert Nasiatka. “We would be nowhere without him.” 

Homer’s offense was led by Maddox Johnson (2 runs & 1 hit), Noah Young (2 runs & 1 hit), Anderson Read (2 hits & 3 RBI’s), Eli McMahon (1 hit & 1 RBI), Evan Sullivan (1 run), Mitchell Earle (1 hit), and Padraig Andrews (1 RBI).

Mexico’s team was led by Carter Robert (1 run & 1 hit) and Brayden Mack (7 strikeouts thrown).

According to the Homer athletics calendar, this was Homer’s last scheduled game of the regular season. 

Homer will now wait to see who they will be facing in their first sectional tournament game. According to the Section III website, there will be a seeding meeting on Sunday, May 21st, 2023.

Varsity Track & Field: Cortland vs. Multiple Schools (SCAC Empire Championships)

The Cortland Purple Tigers competed in the SCAC Empire Championships 2023 at Central Square high school Thursday afternoon.

This was Cortland’s last meet before the Sectional Championships, which are scheduled to take place at Camden high school on Thursday (May 25th) at 4pm. 

Varsity Girls Golf: Marathon vs. Vestal

The Marathon Lady Olympians defeated Vestal at the Maple Hill Golf Course with a team score of 206-215. (Reminder: Lowest score in golf wins).
