Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (May 23rd)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Tuesday’s events:

Varsity Track & Field: Marathon vs. Multiple Schools (Section IV Class D Championships)

The Marathon Olympians hosted the Section IV Class D Championships both Monday and Tuesday afternoon.

Here are some highlights from both the Marathon boys’ and girls’ teams:

Marathon Boys

  • Conor Holland placed 3rd in the high jump event (Result - 5’8”). He also finished 4th in the 110 meter hurdles (Time - 17.95) 
  • Andrew Edsall placed 7th in the pole vault event (Result - 9’0”)

Marathon Girls

  • Abigail Trabucco won 1st place in the pole vault event (Result - 8’0”)
  • Addison Oram got 4th place in the high jump event (Result - 4’6”). She also placed 5th in the 400 meter run (Time - 1:05.83)
  • Catherine Newkirk finished 3rd in the 100 meter hurdles (Time - 17.83). She also came in 6th place in the 200 meter run (Time - 28.77)
  • Abigail Edsall came in 7th place in the 2,000 meter steeplechase (Result - 9:25.69)
  • Shaelin Phillips placed 8th in the 2,000 meter steeplechase (Result - 9:31.73)

Varsity Baseball: Cortland vs. Bishop Grimes (1st Round of Sectionals)

The No.4 seeded Cortland Purple Tigers defeated No.13 seeded Bishop Grimes with a score of 9-1 in the first round of the Section III Class B playoff tournament Tuesday evening.

With this win, Cortland has moved on to the quarterfinal round of the tournament. 

According to Cortland’s athletics website, the Purple Tigers are scheduled to host the quarterfinal round of the sectional tournament against No.5 seeded Camden. The game will be played at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex this Thursday (May 25th) at 5pm. 

Varsity Baseball: Homer vs. Skaneateles (1st Round of Sectionals)

The No.8 seeded Homer Trojans’ season came to an end after falling to No.9 seeded Skaneateles in the first round of the Section III Class B playoff tournament.

With this loss, Homer ended their season with an overall record of 10-8.

Varsity Baseball: McGraw vs. Brookfield (1st Round of Sectionals)

The No.9 seeded McGraw Eagles lost in the first round of the Section III Class D playoff tournament against No.8 seeded Brookfield Tuesday evening. McGraw lost the game with a final score of 3-5. 

McGraw was led by Blair Mulcahy (2 runs, 2 hits & 1 strikeout thrown), Jaydon Bassett (2 hits, 1 RBI & 2 strikeouts thrown), Calob Sutton (1 run & 1 RBI), Nick Sutton (1 hit), Brennan Wilson (1 hit), and Blake Bergey (2 strikeouts thrown)

Brookfield was led by Daniel Head (1 homerun, 3 hits, 2 RBI’s & 7 strikeouts thrown), Tyler Marshall (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Bryce Smith (1 run & 2 hits), Conner DiBrango (2 hits & 1 RBI), Thatcher Bugbee (1 run & 1 hit), Gabe VanNort (1 run), and Joe Walker (1 hit & 1 strikeout thrown). 

With this loss, McGraw ended their season with an overall record of 9-10. 

Varsity Softball: Cincinnatus vs. Madison (1st Round of Sectionals)

The No.6 seeded Cincinnatus Lady Lions won the first round of the Section III Class D playoff tournament with a score of 13-3 against No.11 seeded Madison Tuesday afternoon.

Cincinnatus was led by Lucy Finch (1 homerun, 3 total runs, 3 hits & 3 RBI’s), Payton Gerrard (3 runs, 3 hits & 9 strikeouts thrown), Piper Landers (2 runs & 2 hits), Gabriella Taylor (1 run & 3 hits), Kaylee Brenchley (1 run, 2 hits, 1 RBI & 4 strikeouts thrown), Jamber Aiken (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Jarisa Temple (1 run & 2 hits), Maddison Streichert (1 hit & 2 RBI’s), and Madison Stover (1 hit).

Cincinnatus is scheduled to play in the quarterfinal round of the sectional tournament on the road against No.3 seeded Sackets Harbor. The game will be played at Sackets Harbor high school on Thursday (May 25th) at 5pm.

After winning the opening round of the Section III Class B playoff tournament against Cortland, The No. 18 seeded Homer Lady Trojans were scheduled to play No.2 seeded Chittenago in the first round Tuesday evening. 

Homer suffered an unfortunate loss against Chittenango with a score of 0-19. 

Homer was led by Cecelia Rappleyea (1 hit) and Jenna Henderson (1 strikeout thrown). 

Chittenango was led by Anna Spencer (3 runs, 4 hits & 6 RBI’s), Stephanie Huckabee (4 runs, 3 hits & 1 RBI), Anna Cavotta (3 runs & 1 hit), Mackenna Palko (2 runs, 2 hits & 2 RBI’s), Alivia Cavotta (3 runs & 1 hit), Lauren Machan (2 runs, 1 hit & 3 RBI’s), Savannah Drake (2 runs), and Brianna Tooke (1 hit & 4 RBI’s), and Caroline Porter (11 strikeouts thrown).

With this loss, Homer ended their season with a 7-12 record. 

Varsity Softball: Marathon vs. Deposit-Hancock (Sectional Quarterfinals)

The No.8 seeded Marathon Lady Olympians lost 0-19 in the quarterfinal round of the Section IV Class D Tournament against top-seeded Deposit-Hancock.

With this loss, Marathon ended their season with an overall record of 8-11.

The No.10 seeded Cortland Purple Tigers ended their season after losing a close game on the road against No.7 seeded Indian River in the first round of the Section III Class C playoff tournament Tuesday night. 

Cortland lost the game with a score of 11-15.

Cortland was led by Ryan Kline (2 goals & 1 assist), Benjamin McGrath (8 goals & 1 assist), Bodey McGrath (1 goal & 1 assist), and Declan Vail (11 saves). 

Indian River was led by Riley Alexander (5 goals), Connor McMahon (4 goals & 1 assist), Ethan Petrus (3 goals & 4 assists), Trevor Shawcross (1 goal & 1 assist), Zachary McMahon (1 goal), and Mason Rowley (1 goal), and Jase Favret (6 saves).

Cortland ended their season with an overall record of 6-11. 

Varsity Girls Lacrosse: Cortland vs. Indian River (1st Round of Sectionals)

The No. 8 seeded Cortland Lady Purple Tigers fell to No.1 seeded Indian River after a tight game with a score of 0-1 in the Section III Class C Tournament.
