A new playground is officially open in the city of Cortland.

The brand-new playground located at Yaman Park on Kennedy Parkway was first made available to the public on Tuesday morning, once the installation of mulch was completed. It’s stylized as a mini city and will include a playhouse, garden crawl tunnel and more.

According to Cortland Youth Bureau (CYB) director Andrea Piedigrossi, the playground has a “toddler focus,” with pieces of the playground for sensory play.

The pieces inside the mini city, Piedigrossi added, have sensory pieces for color, textures, shapes and more. The new setup will also include a new swing set with therapeutic, generation, and bucket and belt swings.

Piedigrossi noted in the past that this new playground is the first of its kind in Cortland and surrounding communities. The playground will have a mix of blue, green, yellow and red colors, including a mash-up of traditional playgrounds and modern-looking ones.

CYB’s Facebook post noted “finishing touches” for the new playground. Piedigrossi said this includes cleaning all of the equipment due to mud from rain, some landscaping and the addition of picnic tables.

“Our maintenance crew worked so hard to get this playground opened as soon as possible, and none of this would have been possible without them,” Piedigrossi said. “They are the ones who make our parks such a nice place to visit.”
