The proposed new Cortland County mental health building on Port Watson Street in the city of Cortland is set to expand the county mental health department’s physical space as well as improve services and treatment, officials say.

Sharon MacDougall, the director of community services at the county mental health department, said the new center would provide almost twice the physical space in the new building than the current building

The county has the end of 2024 as its goal for the center to be operational.

“It would improve our services/treatment to provide a welcoming, therapeutic, safe space for our clients,” MacDougall said. “It would provide an expanded and safer parking lot for our vulnerable clients and family.”

MacDougall said the center would also have an elevator for better accessibility for clients. She added the location at 111 Port Watson Street provides consistency in terms of location.

“It maintains our treatment and services in the downtown setting, but separate from the college/restaurant/bar area of town for improved privacy,” MacDougall said.

The county has provided a video containing a breakdown of construction for the new mental health building. It can be viewed by clicking here.
