Two Main Street restaurants to close; one may make a return

Two Main Street restaurants in the city of Cortland are closing, but one could make a return in the future.

According to The Deli Downtown Facebook page, the business announced late Sunday evening (July 30) that it is officially closing its doors.

A staple in the Cortland community, The Deli Downtown’s grand opening was on May 12, 2003. The business’s final day was May 6 (2023).

“It's time to bid adieu to The Deli Downtown,” said Jeanne via the Facebook post. “After two decades of slicing meats and stacking ingredients with the precision of a Jenga master, I've decided to hang up my apron, toss my powder-free poly gloves, and wear my hair without proper restraints.”

Jeanne continued, “From the depths of my mayo-slathered heart, I want to express my immense gratitude for your unwavering support throughout these 20 flavor-packed years. As always, much love to all our staff over the years (even the ones who constantly had "the stomach bug") and to the Cortland Community for two decades of support.”

The Deli Downtown is having a “Farewell to Foccacia” sale on Aug. 12 starting at 10 a.m. Details on the business’s event can be viewed by clicking here.

According to WSYR in Syracuse, a representative of Garcia’s Mexican restaurant and grocery store in Cortland said there are currently no plans to reopen the business. Garcia’s, which had apartments above them on the second floor, hasn’t been open since there was a building fire in March.

According to WSYR, Garcia’s manager Amanda Brown told the station’s Your Stories team that reopening the Cortland restaurant could occur in the future. If Garcia’s returns to Cortland, Brown said, it would have to be in a new location.

According to WSYR, Garcia’s is focused on two other locations in Horseheads and Waverly. The restaurant in Waverly opened in July.
