County woman allegedly steals 10s of thousands in benefits

A woman allegedly stole 10s of thousands of dollars in benefits, according to a report.

The Cortland County Sheriff’s Office report stated that Valkyrie Niles, 36, of the town of Cincinnatus, allegedly failed to “provide required information” to the Cortland County Department of Social Services between June 2020 through December 2022.

According to the report, the information required was household composition and income. The report continued by saying that Niles allegedly received benefits in excess of $23,000 that “she was not entitled to.”

Niles was arrested on Monday (Aug. 28) and charged with third-degree welfare fraud and third-degree grand larceny (both Class-D Felonies), and four counts of first-degree offering a false instrument for filing (a Class-E Felony).

Niles was arraigned, released and now due to appear in court on Sept. 27.
