Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (September 9th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Saturday’s events:

Varsity Boys Soccer: Cortland vs. DeRuyter (DeRuyter Boys Booster Blast Off Tournament Final)

The Cortland Purple Tigers won 1-0 against DeRuyter in the “DeRuyter Boys Booster Blast Off Tournament” championship game. 

With this win, Cortland improved to a 2-2 record. 

The only goal of the game was scored by Caden Albright in the first half of the game. 

Cortland goalie Liam Burns made 10 saves in the game, while Wesley Pforter recorded 14 saves for DeRuyter. 

According to Cortland head coach Luke Schweider, Caden Albright received the Offensive MVP of the Tournament award and Robby Temple received the Defensive MVP of the Tournament award. 

Cortland will now look forward to a road game against Westhill on Tuesday (September 12th) at 6:30pm. 

Varsity Boys Soccer: Cincinnatus vs. Stockbridge Valley

The Cincinnatus Lions tied 1-1 in double overtime against Stockbridge Valley after a physical game at home on Saturday (September 9th). 

With Stockbridge Valley playing a physical game and with emotions running high, there was a fight between teammates - Osvaldo CocChub and Jeremias Castillo Garcia before the end of the second half. CocChub ended up receiving a red card after the incident, while Garcia received a yellow card.

Cincinnatus’ next game will be played on the road against Waterville today (Monday, September 11th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Girls Soccer: Cincinnatus vs. Sackets Harbor (DeRuyter Girls Booster Blast Off Tournament Final)

The Cincinnatus Lady Lions won 4-0 in the final round of the “DeRuyter Girls Booster Blast Off Tournament” at DeRuyter high school on Saturday. 

Cincinnatus was led by Payton Landers (1 goal & 1 assist), Madelyn Pittsley (1 goal & 1 assist), Cassia Schuyler (1 goal), Peyton Stith (1 goal), and Ava Larrabee (1 assist). 

Sackets Harbor goalkeeper Lily Green recorded a total of 23 saves in the game. 

With this win, Cincinnatus improved their unbeaten record to 4-0. 

Up next, Cincinnatus will play DeRuyter at the Cincinnatus Fireman's Field today (September 11th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Girls Soccer: Cortland vs. DeRuyter (DeRuyter Girls Booster Blast Off Tournament Consolation Game)

The Cortland Lady Tigers won 8-0 against DeRuyter in the consolation game of the “DeRuyter Girls Booster Blast Off Tournament” on Saturday. 

Cortland was led by Karamia Montalvo (3 goals), Aubree Larkin (2 goals & 1 assist), Zoe Timmerman (1 goal), Sarah Williams (1 goal), Reese Whitney (1 goal), Madison Fitch (1 assist), Bree Brynes (1 assist), and Nora Gross (1 assist). 

Cortland goalkeeper Danica Peck recorded 4 saves in the game, while Abby Stanton made 19 saves for DeRuyter. 

The now 2-2 Lady Tigers will play their next game at home against Westhill on Tuesday (September 12th) at 7pm. 

Varsity Cross Country: Marathon vs. Multiple Teams (Dave Forbes Invitational)

The Marathon Olympians competed in the Dave Forbes Invitational on Saturday at Oneonta high school. Each race was 5,000 meters long. 

Here are some highlights from both Marathon boys’ and girls’ teams:

Marathon Boys

  • Andrew Edsall finished 6th overall (Time - 17:46.8)
  • Zachary Birdsall placed 30th overall (Time - 19:13.9)
  • Blake Birdsall came in 49th place overall (Time - 20:59.5)
  • Luke Barnhart placed 87th overall (Time - 24:55.5)

Marathon Girls

  • Abigail Trabucco finished 25th overall (Time - 24:43.3)
  • Larina Cochran came in 62nd overall (Time - 29:20.6)
  • Hanna Prestigiacom placed 68th overall (Time - 29:51.9)
