The Homer varsity girls volleyball team rallied back after losing a close first set against county rival Cortland to ultimately win the match in four sets Wednesday night.

With this result, Homer improved to a 4-1 record; while Cortland fell to a 1-3 record.

The match was played at Cortland high school, where there was a loud and packed house.

“They (Cortland players) were loud,” said Homer head coach Jeremy Cook. “The gym was loud. We knew it’d be loud here.”

The Cortland Lady Tigers took full advantage of their home court, as they won the opening set with a close score of 26-24.

However, Homer was then able to make adjustments and turn things around to win three straight sets.

When asked what turned things around for Homer, coach Cook responded that “we rely on the three seniors (Mackenzie Hubbard, Lilly Sorenson & Mallory Douglass) to play big.”

Coach Cook also mentioned that they do their best to “stay calm”, because losing a set isn’t losing the whole match.

“It’s always heartbreaking for the girls to lose to their hometown rivals on our own court,” said Cortland head coach Cheri Olson. “Fortunately we get to play them again and we can give it right back to them on their court in October. That’s the plan.”

Homer was led by Mackenzie Hubbard (5 kills, 11 digs, 9 assists & 3 aces), Lilly Sorenson (9 kills, 6 digs & 4 aces), and Mallory Douglass (2 kills, 13 digs, 1 assist & 4 aces).

Cortland was led by Leah Seyfried (3 kills, 1 block, 8 digs & 2 aces), Katie Harris (2 kills, 2 digs & 12 assists), Brenna Hogan (2 kills, 2 blocks, 8 digs & 1 ace), and Alizabeth West (4 kills, 9 digs, 1 assist & 1 ace).

Up next, Homer will host Fowler at Homer high school today (Thursday, September 14th) at 6pm. Cortland plays Corcoran at Cortland high school today (Thursday, September 14th) at 6:30pm.
