Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (September 22nd)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Friday’s events:

Varsity Football: Cortland vs. Mexico

The Cortland Purple Tigers lost a close game against Mexico with a final score of 21-22 on the road Friday night. With this loss, Cortland has fallen to a 1-2 record. 

Cortland’s points were scored by Gage Burlingame (3 rushing touchdowns), Quinn Woodard (1 extra point kick), Jaxson Gambitta (1 two-point conversion reception), and Ethan Johnson (1 two-point conversion pass).

Mexico’s points were scored by Dominic Alfano (1 rushing touchdown & 2 extra point kick), Murabito, Nicholas (1 rushing touchdown), and Zych, Talon (1 rushing touchdown & 1 two-point rushing conversion). 

Cortland’s next game will be played on the road against Ithaca on Friday (September 29th) at 7pm. 

Varsity Football: Homer vs. Chittenango

The Homer Trojans fell to an overall record of 1-2 after losing to Chittenango at home with a score of 14-24 Friday night. 

Homer’s points were scored by Wyatt Wilbur (1 rushing touchdown & 1 two-point conversion pass), Alex Votra (1 rushing touchdown), and Zane Mitchell (1 two-point conversion reception)

Chittenango’s points were scored by Kyle Wehrlin (2 rushing touchdowns & 3 two-point rushing conversion), Hunter Taylor (1 receiving touchdown), and Jack Lamphere (1 touchdown pass). 

Up next, Homer will look to bounce back on the road as they play Westhill on Friday (September 29th) at 6:30pm. 

Varsity Boys Soccer: Homer vs. Otselic Valley

The Homer Trojans lost 1-3 against Otselic Valley on the road Friday evening. With this loss, Homer has fallen to an overall record of 2-5.

Homer is now scheduled to host Mexico at Homer high school on Monday (September 25th) at 7pm. 

Varsity Boys Soccer: Cincinnatus vs. Madison

The Cincinnatus Lions won 3-2 in overtime Friday evening on the road against Madison. With this win, Cincinnatus improved to a 6-2-1 record. 

Cincinnatus was led by Canden Stafford (1 goal & 1 assist), Jack Stafford (1 goal), ​​Trevor Shevalier (1 goal), and John Schuyler (1 assist).

Madison was led by Mike McBride (1 goal), Zach Canning (1 goal), and Kyle Peavy (2 assists). 

Cincinnatus will now play against their county rival McGraw at their annual game at SUNY Cortland tonight (Saturday, September 23rd) at 5pm. 

Varsity Girls Soccer: Homer vs. Syracuse

The Homer Lady Trojans lost 0-3 against Syracuse, making them fall to an overall record of 2-5 Friday evening. 

Syracuse’s goals were scored by Lucy Kuerbis (1 goal), Belvia Konodji (1 goal), and Luca Grifasi (1 goal). 

Up next, Homer was scheduled to host Moravia today (Saturday, September 23rd) at 12pm (noon). The Cortland Voice will have a recap on the game posted on our website this upcoming Monday (September 25th). 

Varsity Field Hockey: Marathon vs. Maine Endwell

The Marathon Lady Olympians fell to an overall record of 7-2 after losing 0-1 against Maine Endwell. 

Marathon goalkeeper Cassandra Forrest recorded a total of 18 saves in the game.

Marathon is now scheduled to host Tioga Senior at Marathon’s Appleby Elementary School this upcoming Tuesday (September 26th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Golf: McGraw vs. Tully

The McGraw Eagles lost to Tully with a score of 266-219 at the Knickerbocker Country Club on Friday. (Reminder: lowest score in golf wins).
