The Cortland Purple Tigers lost a close game against Chittenango Wednesday night at Chittenango high school. Cortland lost the game with a score of 0-2.

This was Cortland’s second game against Chittenango this season. Cortland lost their first outing, with a score of 1-5 on September 6th, 2023

“They (Chittenango) have a very distinct style of play that we’ve seen before in the league we were in last year, so we kind of didn’t expect that in our first game,” said Cortland head coach Luke Schweider.

“What we worked on was just to win the ball in the box with good clearances and good headers,” added coach Schweider. “With a talented kid (from Chittenango) that can throw the ball 40 yards in a throw-in, to not concede one of those was pretty impressive. So that was our focus, to be aggressive and fearless in the box. The first time that we played them, we got scored on in the first minute. This time, we battled it out.”

Both of Chittenango’s goals were scored late in the second half by Gavin Karwoski and Jake Wagner.

Throughout the game, Cortland recorded a total of 8 shots (all on goal), while Chittenango recorded 27 shots (10 on goal).

Cortland goalkeeper Liam Burns kept the Purple Tigers in the game, as he made a total of 8 saves. Chittenango’s goalie Logan Bronner also recorded 8 saves.

With this current loss, Cortland has fallen to an overall record of 5-6.

When asked what he would take from this game towards closing out the regular season in the coming weeks, coach Schweider said, “I think that we’ve been battling with the mindset part of games, especially close games like these. So I think that 90 percent of this game, we had our heads clean, and were thinking about what we need to do instead of bad calls or chirping from the other team. So if we take that moving forward, and if we stay focused on our games and keep a clear head, that will take us through the rest of the season to get to our goal.”

Cortland’s next game will be played at Cortland high school this upcoming Saturday (September 30th) against LaFayette. According to the Cortland high school athletics calendar, kick off is scheduled for 10:30am.
