A winter event in the village of Homer is set to return in January, following a 3-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Brenda Contento, Homer Winterfest’s planning committee chair, said at Tuesday’s village board of trustees meeting that the Winterfest event will return to the Village Green and run from Jan. 26 to 28.

“Our motto is ‘we’re back,;” Contento said. “We are not offering a parade this year. There is not enough interest and it is so cold, so hard on the young ones.”

Winterfest’s signature events in the past included ice-skating and sled races, with a good balance of activities geared toward children.

Contento said they anticipate having a banner at the Village Green. Village officials approved the use of the public space unanimously at their Tuesday meeting.

“(We could use) sidewalks cleared if possible,” Contento said.

The event’s signature ice sculptures will arrive on Jan. 26, Contento added.

Village mayor Hal McCabe expressed his excitement for the event’s return.

“Fingers crossed that there’s ice on the ice rink. That would make it really great,” McCabe said. “Winterfest is great. I love it.”
