Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (September 28th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Thursday’s events:

Varsity Field Hockey: Marathon vs. Owego Free Academy

The Marathon Lady Olympians defeated Owego Free Academy with a score of 5-1 on the road Thursday evening in order to improve to an overall record of 9-2. 

Marathon was led by Delaney Reilly (2 goals), Melodie Sutton (2 goals), Savanna Warfield (1 goal & 1 assist), Catherine Newkirk (2 assists), and Cassandra Forrest (7 saves). 

Owego Free Academy’s only goal was scored by Melissa Mcevoy. 

Up next, Marathon will look to keep improving their record as they host Moravia Central at Marathon’s Appleby Elementary on Monday (October 2nd) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Field Hockey: Homer vs. Weedsport

The Homer Lady Trojans lost a close game against Weedsport with a score of 0-1. With this loss, Homer has fallen to an overall record of 4-7. 

Homer goalkeeper Aislynn Cobb made 5 saves in the game. 

Weedsport was led by Gabriella Jeffers (1 goal) and Arieanna Giacolone (5 saves).

Homer’s next game will be played against county rival Cortland on Tuesday (October 3rd) at Homer high school. The game is scheduled to begin at 5pm. 

Varsity Boys Soccer: Marathon vs. Southern Cayuga

The Marathon Olympians defeated Southern Cayuga in a dramatic fashion Thursday evening at Marathon high school. 

The Olympians won the game 1-0 in double overtime with a last minute goal from senior Bode Carter, assisted by fellow senior Jacob Byron. 

According to Marathon head coach Aubrey Brown, senior Braydon Homer played a major role in Marathon's 10th shutout win of the season with his lockdown defense. 

Marathon goalkeeper Daniel Merihew also helped the Olympians by recording 4 saves in the game.  

This win avenges Marathon’s only loss of the season to Southern Cayuga on September 18th, 2023

The now 10-1 Olympians are scheduled to play Dryden at Dryden high school on Saturday (September 30th) at 7pm. 

Varsity Girls Volleyball: Homer vs. Westhill

The Homer Lady Olympians lost against Westhill in three straight sets Thursday night. 

Homer was led by Mackenzie Hubbard (2 kills, 9 digs & 1 ace), Lilly Sorenson (3 kills, 6 digs, & 3 assists), and Mallory Douglass (11 digs). 

Westhill was led by Ava Baty (2 kills, 10 digs, 23 assists & 1 ace) and Eva Tarolli (10 kills, 3 blocks & 1 dig). 

With this loss, Homer has fallen to an overall record of 6-3. 

Homer looks to bounce back tonight when they play LaFayette tonight (Friday, September 29th) at LaFayette high school at 5:30pm. 

Varsity Girls Tennis: Homer vs. Bishop grimes

The Homer Lady Trojans defeated Bishop Grimes on the road with a team score of 1-6 Thursday evening. 

Here are the results from each of Thursday’s matches:

  • First Singles: MacKenzie Skodzinsky (Homer) lost to Sofia Ziankoski (Bishop Grimes) - (0-6) & (0-6)
  • Second Singles: Ginny Park (Homer) defeated Ashlee Brisson (Bishop Grimes) - (6-0) & (6-0)
  • Third Singles: Brown, Isabelle (Homer) won by Forfeit
  • First Doubles: Lauren Franco & Emma Effinger (Homer) defeated Kristina Kovar & Kaitlyn Snell (Bishop Grimes) - (6-0) & (6-0)
  • Second Doubles: Nina Svereika & Georgia Wallis (Homer) defeated Lania Young & Francesca Smith (Bishop Grimes) - (6-3) & (6-2)
  • Third Doubles: Elizabeth McCloy & Sunny Park (Homer) won by forfeit
  • Fourth Doubles: MacKenzie Lyman & Lucy Goodwin (Homer) won by forfeit
