FEMA and FCC will conduct a nationwide test of the emergency alert system (EAS) and the wireless emergency alerts (WEA) today.

The EAS and WEA test alerts are scheduled to begin at 2:20 p.m. later today. The EAS portion will be sent to radios and televisions, while the WEA portion will go to cell phones.

“The purpose of the test is to ensure that the systems continue to be effective means of warning the public about emergencies, particularly those on the national level,” according to a release.

If today’s test is postponed due to weather or other significant events, the backup testing date is Wednesday, Oct. 11.
