The Marathon Olympians played a Cortland county matchup against the Cincinnatus Lions Tuesday evening at the Fireman’s Field in Cincinnatus. Marathon won the game with a score of 2-0.

Both of Marathon’s goals were scored in the first half of the game.

The first goal was scored with over 25 minutes left in the half by senior Bryce Hartman off an assist from fellow senior Bode Carter. Hartman ended up shooting the ball on the left side from outside the box.

No less than five minutes later, Marathon sophomore Camdyn Kashuba headed the ball in to score off a corner kick from Bryce Hartman to make it 2-0.

The second half of the game was well fought out, with both teams getting a fair amount of looks at goal.

The majority of Cincinnatus’ shots were attempted in the second half, with a total of 6 shots. Marathon’s defense was able to stand strong to get the shutout win.

Marathon goalkeeper Daniel Merihew recorded a total of 2 saves in the game, while Collin Holtmart recorded 3 saves for Cincinnatus

“We won, and I think the biggest thing is that it was a shutout,” said Bryce Hartman. “Our defense was strong, and I think that if we can keep that zero on the board (for the opposing team), we should be able to win games. I think overall we did good. We moved the ball out well. We have a good team, so I hope that we can start clicking, move forward, and go far in sectionals.”

When asked about the game, Marathon head coach Aubrey Brown said, “it was a good game. We knew coming in that they (Cincinnatus) have been playing well. Even back in the day with the Cincy-Marathon rivalry, we knew that regardless of how good the teams were, that it was going to be a battle and it was.”

With Tuesday’s result, Marathon improved to an overall record of 12-1-1 and Cincinnatus fell to an 8-4-1 record.

Marathon’s next game is scheduled to be played on the road against Moravia Central this Thursday (October 5th) at 4:30pm. Cincinnatus will look to bounce back when they host county rival McGraw at the Fireman’s Field in Cincinnatus on Friday (October 6th) at 4:30pm.
