Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (October 6th)

Varsity Football: Cortland vs. Oswego

The Cortland Purple Tigers defeated Oswego with a score of 26-15 at Cortland junior-senior high school Friday night. This is Cortland’s second win of the season, bringing their overall record up to 2-4. 

Cortland’s points were scored by Gage Burlingame (3 rushing touchdowns), Robert Atkins (1 rushing touchdown), and Jaxson Gambitta (2 extra-point kicks made). 

Oswego’s points were scored by Matt Willis (2 rushing touchdowns & 1 two-point conversion), and Antonio Rivera Gonzalez (1 extra point kick made). 

Cortland’s defense was led by Wyatt Tinker (16 tackles), Logan Toomey (7 tackles & 1 interception), Quinn Woodard (11 tackles), Kollin Rae Dye (11 tackles), and Jaxson Gambitta (11 tackles). 

The Purple Tigers will now look forward to playing in the annual Home-Cort Jug game against county rival Homer on Friday (October 13th). This year’s Home-Cort Jug game will be played at Homer high school. The game is scheduled to kickoff at 7pm.

Varsity Football: Homer vs. Indian River

The Homer Trojans fell to an overall record of 2-3 after losing to Indian River at Homer high school Friday night. Homer lost the game with a score of 10-42. 

Homer’s points were scored by Laramy Velasquez (1 field goal & 1 extra point kick) and Alex Votra (1 rushing touchdown). Votra also recorded a total of 62 rushing yards in the game. 

Indian River’s points were scored by Derek Jones (3 rushing touchdowns), Fredrick Haynes Jr (1 rushing touchdown & 2 two-point conversions), Ethan Hattori (1 rushing touchdown & 1 two-point conversion), and Azhari Berroa-Prensa (1 rushing touchdown). 

Homer’s defense was led by Tasker Dennis (7 tackles), Brycen Poole (6 tackles), and Ethan Knight (6 tackles). 

Homer is now scheduled to host the annual Home-Cort Jug game against county rival Cortland at Homer high school on Friday (October 13th). The game is scheduled to kickoff at 7pm.

Varsity Boys Soccer: Cincinnatus vs. McGraw

The Cincinnatus Lions won 2-0 against county rival McGraw at the Fireman’s Field in Cincinnatus Friday evening.

With this result, Cincinnatus improved to a 9-4-1 record, while McGraw fell to 6-6-1. 

Cincinnatus was led by Trevor Shevalier (1 goal), Caleb Souva (1 goal), Garrett Lieb (1 assist), and John Schuyler (1 assist). 

According to the Cincinnatus athletics calendar, the Lions will play on the road against Greene at 1pm today (October 7th). The Cortland Voice will have a written recap on the game on Monday (October 9th). 

McGraw on the other hand will play on the road against Madison this upcoming Wednesday (October 11th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Field Hockey: Marathon vs. Spencer Van Etten Central

The Marathon Lady Olympians defeated Spencer Van Etten Central with a score of 2-1 in order to improve to a 10-3 overall record. 

Marathon was led by Savanna Warfield (2 goals), Autumn Young (2 assists), and Cassandra Forrest (3 saves). 

Spencer Van Etten Central was led by Megan Williamson (1 goal) and Katelyn Klym (6 saves). 

Marathon’s next game is scheduled to be played against  Newark Valley at Marathon’s Appleby Elementary school on Wednesday (October 11th). The start time of the game is yet to be announced. 

Varsity Girls Volleyball: Homer vs. Auburn

The Homer Lady Trojans defeated Auburn in three straight sets Friday night. With this win, Homer improved to an 8-5 record. 

Homer was led by Mackenzie Hubbard (9 kills, 12 digs, 8 assists & 5 aces), Lilly Sorenson (11 kills, 9 digs, 11 assists & 2 aces), and Mallory Douglass (15 digs & 2 aces). 

Auburn was led by Cianna Bailey (5 kills & 10 digs) and Shailyah Helmick (15 digs & 2 aces), and Kirsten Casterline (3 blocks, 2 digs, 10 assists & 1 ace). 

Homer will now look forward to playing against West Genesee on the road this upcoming Tuesday (October 10th) at 6pm. 

Varsity Cross Country: Marathon vs. Multiple Teams (Bob Greene/Newark Valley Invitational)

The Marathon Olympians competed in the Bob Greene/Newark Valley Invitational at Newark Valley high school on Friday. Each race was 5,000 meter long

A total of 93 runners competed in the boys’ race, while a total of 117 runners competed in the girls’ race. 

Here are some highlights from both Marathon boys’ and girls’ teams:

Marathon Boys

  • Zachary Birdsall placed 24th overall (Time - 18:57.1)

Marathon Girls

  • Abigail Trabucco finished 51st place overall (Time - 24:14.7)
  • Hanna Prestigiacomo came in 90th place overall (Time - 28:34.3)
