The 6th-seeded Marathon Lady Olympians lost a close game against 3rd-seed Southern Cayuga in the quarterfinal stage of the Section IV Class C tournament on Saturday. Marathon lost the game with a score of 2-3 in double overtime

Marathon started things well with a 2-0 lead.

Marathon’s first goal was scored by Kennedy Eaton off an assist from Marissa Allen a little over halfway through the first half.

Marathon then scored again with a ball placed on the top of the box for Megan Stewart to put it behind the net.

Before halftime however, Marathon scored an unfortunate own goal during a Southern Cayuga free kick to make it 2-1.

From then on it was a battle, with Southern Cayuga keeping pressure on the Lady Olympians, since they didn’t want their season to end.

Southern Cayuga finally tied things up 2-2 with about four minutes left in regulation time, with a goal from Haylee Young on a direct free kick.

After a scoreless first overtime period, Haylee Young would come in clutch again for Southern Cayuga to score the winning goal in the second overtime period.

“This was a much improved season for the Marathon girls, especially on defense,” said Marathon head coach Beth Anne Duncan. “We only lost by more than 1 goal in one game this season. I’m proud of them for putting in the work. I’m sorry to see this special group of seniors end their careers like this.”

With this sectional quarterfinal exit, Marathon ended the season with an overall record of 10-7-1.
