Cortland’s season ends with close sectional loss vs. Mexico; Burlingame eclipses 1,000 rushing yards on the season

The Cortland Purple Tigers lost against Mexico with a score of 34-41 in the opening round of the Section III Class B Tier 2 playoff tournament Thursday night. The game was played at Mexico high school.

Cortland came into the game as the No.3 seed, while Mexico had the No.2 seed. 

The game turned out to be a back and forth battle from the beginning. 

After a scoreless first quarter, Mexico scored two touchdowns to make it 0-14. Cortland would score a touchdown of their own before halftime to make it 7-14. 

Neither team gave the other an edge in the second half, as both teams ended up scoring 27 points in the half. This outcome gave Mexico the win, after outscoring Cortland in the first half by one touchdown. 

Cortland’s points were scored by Robbie Atkins (1 rushing touchdown & 2 touchdown passes), DaeSean West (2 touchdown receptions), Gage Burlingame (2 rushing touchdowns), and Quinn Woodard (4 extra point kicks). 

Mexico’s points were scored by Brayden Mack (5 rushing touchdowns), Dominic Alfano-Kimball (1 kickoff return touchdown), and Wyatt Dann (5 extra point kicks).

Cortland was ultimately led by Gage Burlingame (24 rushes, 82 rushing  yards, 2 receptions & 30 receiving yards), Robbie Atkins (15 completed passes & 192 passing yards), Daesean West (5 receptions, 113 receiving yards & 8 tackles), Wyatt Tinker (15 tackles & 1 sack), Quinn Woodard (5 tackles), and Daniel Jackson (2 receptions, 33 receiving yards & 9 tackles). 

According to Cortland head coach Brett Segala, senior captain Gage Burlingame eclipsed 1,000 rushing yards on the season.

With this loss, Cortland ended their season with an overall record of 3-6.
