An active day with multiple weather hazards will unfold across the area today.

A large, strong low pressure system will move northeast into the Great Lakes and will be responsible for our weather today.

The morning will be cloudy but dry with increasing southeast winds. Gusts may be as high as 40 mph by noon.

During the early afternoon, precipitation will move in from the southwest. This will start as snow and only gradually change over to rain later in the afternoon.

Several inches of accumulation are possible over higher elevations. Lower elevations will see lighter accumulations. Road conditions will be fair to mixed, depending on elevation, traffic, and treatment. Most major, lower elevation roads will be primarily wet.

Rain will eventually take over as the dominant precipitation type during the late afternoon or early evening. Locally heavy downpours will be possible with up to an inch of rain falling.

The rain will combine with rapid snowmelt as temperatures and dewpoints shoot up into the 40s overnight. This will lead to some localized areas of small stream, poor drainage, and basement flooding.

Winds will continue to increase, peaking between sunset and midnight. Still coming from the southeast, wind gusts of 50-70 mph will be possible. The highest gusts will be found over the northern hills and north facing slopes.

Localized tree damage and power outages are likely. The wind speed will drop sharply after midnight following the passage of a cold front and a shift to the southwest.

Temperatures will drop behind the overnight cold front and should be into the upper 30s by sunrise Wednesday.

Here is a look at the weather for the next few days:

Wednesday: Rain and snow showers. Windy, but not as strong as Tuesday night. Temperatures steady in the upper 30s most of the day before dropping late.

Thursday: Clouds and a few snow showers. Morning lows in the upper 20s. Afternoon highs in the mid 30s.

Friday: Cloudy with snow arriving late, likely turning to rain by evening. Another round of strong, potentially damaging winds possible. Morning lows in the mid 20s. Afternoon temperatures highs in the mid 30s.

Saturday: Breezy with areas of snow possible. Morning temperatures in the upper 30s falling to the low 30s in the afternoon.
