A high wind warning has been issued for Cortland County that will go from Tuesday afternoon to the early-morning hours of Wednesday.

The high wind warning in the county will be in effect from 1 p.m. Tuesday to 4 a.m. Wednesday. According to Tuesday’s Cortland Voice weather report by Drew Montreuil, wind gusts could be as high as 40 miles-per-hour (mph) by noon Tuesday, with increasing southeast winds between 30-to-35 mph throughout the day.

Noted in Montreuil’s report:

“Winds will continue to increase, peaking between sunset and midnight. Still coming from the southeast, wind gusts of 50-70 mph will be possible. The highest gusts will be found over the northern hills and north facing slopes.

“The wind speed will drop sharply after midnight following the passage of a cold front and a shift to the southwest.”

Along with potentially damaging wind gusts, heavy rainfall up to an inch is expected in the county. A few inches of snow is also projected through Tuesday afternoon, which will change over to wet snow and rain by the evening.

The county’s high wind warning will also be in effect for Tompkins and Schuyler counties.
