Workers from the City of Cortland Department of Public Works were in the downtown area Friday morning to touch up spots on the road.

Spots on Main Street between the Groton Avenue/Clinton Avenue intersection and Port Watson Street/Tompkins Street intersection recently experienced the development of potholes and soft spots in the blacktop.

City DPW deputy superintendent Bill Lund told The Cortland Voice on Friday that soft spots developed where trenches were cut for water main installation during Cortland’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) construction this past fall.

“It's an ongoing, temporary blacktop until the new construction season starts in the springtime,” Lund said.

A fresh mix of asphalt will be laid down on the previously located soft spots. Work began at 9 a.m. on Friday and will conclude approximately around noon, Lund said.

Lund mentioned five soft spots will be fixed on Main Street, not just for traffic but also the city’s plow trucks.

“It’s not recurring soft spots,” Lund said, noting a similar issue on Main Street in the late part of the fall season.

Lund is unsure if more soft spots will develop in the future.

“It all depends on how the temporary blacktop wears and how much mother nature is going to impact it,” Lund said.

The city’s blacktop mix will also be used to pave a portion of Pendleton Street after it experienced a water main break on Thursday. Lund noted that the section of Pendleton Street between Port Watson Street and Randall Street will be closed until early afternoon.
