Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (January 18th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Thursday’s events:

Varsity Girls Volleyball: McGraw vs. Brookfield

The McGraw Lady Eagles improved to an overall record of 4-5 after beating Brookfield at home Thursday night. McGraw won their match in three straight sets. 

McGraw was led by Remington Stull (3 kills, 2 digs & 8 aces), Camdyn Caperton (2 kills, 4 assists & 4 aces), Morgan Brown (1 kill, 1 dig, 4 assists & 1 ace), Emmily Thomas (2 kills, 1 dig & 1 ace), Mikenlee Ticknor (1 kill & 3 aces), Adrianna Stacconi (1 kill & 2 digs), Myranda Murray (1 kill & 2 digs), Riley Reed (1 kill & 1 ace).

Note: Brookfield’s stats were not made available by the time this article was written. 

McGraw will now look forward to playing against Brookfield on the road this upcoming Tuesday (January 23rd) at 5:30pm. 

Varsity Girls Volleyball: Cincinnatus vs. DeRuyter

The Cincinnatus Lady Lions defeated DeRuyter in three straight sets to improve to an 11-2 record. 

Cincinnatus was led by Allyson St. Germain (13 kills, 5 digs, 4 aces & 13 service points), Kaedance Latta (5 kills, 4 digs, 15 assists, 1 ace & 9 service points), Payton Gerrard (3 digs, 4 aces & 9 service points), Lucy Finch (2 kills & 1 block), and Madelyn Pittsley (1 kill, 2 digs, 1 ace & 3 service points). 

DeRuyter was led by Molly Amidon (1 kill, 2 digs & 3 assists), Shanley Nicholas (9 digs & 1 ace), and Adelia Leonardo (2 kills & 3 digs).

Cincinnatus’ next match will be played on the road against Sherburne-Earlville on Friday (January 26th) at 7pm. 

Varsity Boys Volleyball: Cincinnatus vs. Herkimer

The Cincinnatus Lions lost to Herkimer in three sets, making them fall to an 0-6 record. 

Cincinnatus was led by Hunter Downes (5 kills, 3 blocks & 1 ace) and Alan Cook (4 kills & 1 ace).

Up next, Cincinnatus will play Little Falls on the road this Saturday (January 20th) at 1pm. 

Varsity Track & Field: Homer vs. Multiple Teams (Bob Grieve Memorial)

The Homer Trojans competed in the Bob Grieve Memorial meet at Onondaga Community College Thursday evening. 

Here are some highlights from both the Homer boys’ and girls’ teams:

Homer Boys

  • Tasker Dennis came in 8th place in the shot put event (Result - 40’3.50”). He also placed 7th in the weight throw event (Result - 44’7.25”)
  • Homer’s 4x200 meter relay team (Nick Costa, Gunnar Tyrrell, Anderson Lowell & Tristyn Henkel) finished in 8th place with an official time of 1:43.67

Homer Girls

  • Lizzie O'Donnell came in 4th place in the shot put event (Result - 29’11.25”)
  • Molly McMasters placed 5th in the weight throw event (Result - 33’2.50”). He also came in 7th place in the shot put event (Result - 28’10.50”)
  • Isabell-Ann Tutino finished in 7th place in the long jump event (Result - 15’7.50”)
  • Hannah Bouwens placed 7th in the weight throw event (Result - 31’6”)
  • Ingrid Aagaard finished in 3rd place in the 1,000 meter run (Time - 3:06.88)
  • Homer’s 4x200 meter relay team (Izzy Tutino, Ingrid Aagaard, Caitlin McCloy & Mikayla Smith) came in 6th place with an official time of 1:56.83

Varsity Track & Field: Cortland vs. Multiple Teams (Bob Grieve Memorial)

The Cortland Purple Tigers participated in the Bob Grieve Memorial meet at Onondaga Community College. 

Here are some highlights from both the Cortland boys’ and girls’ teams:

Cortland Boys

  • Jack Phelan won 1st place in the triple jump event (Result - 42’9.50”). He also came in 6th place in the 55 meter dash (Time - 7.02)
  • Bryan Honan won 1st place in the weight throw event (Result - 54’11”). He also placed 6th in the shot put event (Result - 41’5”)
  • Michael Dearie came in 3rd place in the shot put event (Result - 43’6.75”). He also placed 5th in the weight throw event (Result - 46’1”) 

Cortland Girls

  • Rileigh Madden tied for 4th place in the pole vault event (Result - 8’0”)
  • Ashley Merritt tied for 4th in the pole vault event (Result - 8’0”)
  • Campbell Bush finished in 8th place in the 55 meter hurdles (Time - 9.59)

Varsity Ice Hockey: Cortland-Homer vs. Clinton

The Cortland-Homer Golden Eagles fell to an overall record of 3-12 after losing to Clinton Thursday night at the JM McDonald Sports Complex. Cortland-Homer lost the game with a score of 6-2. 

Cortland-Homer was led by Brady Coffin (2 assists), Bodey McGrath (1 goal), Preston Bowman (1 goal), Cole Mead (34 saves), and Jack Medeiros (13 saves).

Clinton was led by Aiden Soika (2 assists), Colton Bobowski (1 assist), Ian O’Brien (1 goal), Tim Bingham (1 goal & 1 assist), Tom Bingham (1 goal), Max Williams (1 assist), Justin Zalewski (1 goal & 1 assist), Nolan O’Brien (2 goals & 2 assists), and Will O’Brien (29 saves).

Up next, Cortland-Homer will host Ithaca at the JM McDonald Sports Complex in Cortland on Tuesday (January 23rd) at 7pm. 

Varsity Boys Basketball: Homer vs. Chittenango

The Homer Trojans lost 54-38 against Chittenango at Homer high school Thursday night. With this loss, Homer has fallen to an overall record of 6-6. 

Homer was led by Max Franco (15 points), Wyatt Wilbur (9 points), Kaden Durham (8 points), Tyler Van Etten (4 points), and Mitchell Earle (2 points). 

Chittenango was led by Ryan Moesch (40 points), Jack Lamphere (8 points), Bernardo Bortovski (4 points), and Brendon Barnard (2 points). 

Up next, Homer is scheduled to play on the road against county rival Cortland on Friday (January 26th) at 6:45pm. 

Varsity Wrestling: Marathon vs. Greene Central

The Marathon Olympians defeated Greene Central with a team score of 43-22 at Marathon’s Appleby Elementary Thursday night.
