Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (January 25th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Thursday’s events:

Varsity Girls Basketball: Cortland vs. Homer

The Cortland Lady Tigers beat their county rival, the Homer Lady Trojans with a score of 53-22 Thursday night. 

With this result, Cortland improved to a 12-1 record, while Homer fell to 4-10. 

According to the latest New York State Sportswriters Association’s rankings, Cortland is ranked 9th in the state for Class A

Cortland was led by Claire Turner (13 points), Kendall Mack (11 points), Lily Yang (8 points), Valerosa Gambitta (7 points), Katherine Harris (5 points), Lily Tinker (3 points), Aubree Larkin (3 points), Zee-Anna Sweat-Rice (2 points), and Kartyr Hubbard (1 point). 

Homer was led by Lauren Franco (8 points), Anya Gofkowski (6 points), Brayden Partigianoni (3 points), Elia Spanbauer (3 points), and Elizabeth McCloy (2 points). 

Up next, Cortland will host New Hartford at Cortland junior-senior high school this Saturday (January 27th) at 1pm; while Homer plays on the road against Tully on Saturday (January 27th) at 12:30pm. 

Varsity Girls Basketball: Cincinnatus vs. Solvay

The Cincinnatus girls basketball team fell to an overall record of 4-11 after losing to Solvay with a score of 45-21. 

Cincinnatus was led by Cortney Scutt (13 points), Rachael Standish (6 points), and Sidney Glover (2 points). 

Solvay was led by Neonna Turk (19 points), Ciara Togni (8 points), Annabelle Stewart (8 points), Janiya Walters (6 points), and Shay'Eanna Turk (4 points).

Cincinnatus’ next game will be played on the road against Otselic Valley on Monday (February 5th) at 6pm. 

Varsity Ice Hockey: Cortland-Homer vs. Whitesboro

The Cortland-Homer Golden Eagles lost to Whitesboro with a score of 5-3. With this result, Cortland-Homer has fallen to an overall record of 3-14. 

Cortland-Homer was led by Gabe O'Connor (2 goals), Liam O'Connor (1 goal & 1 assist), Ethan Aumick (1 assist), Jack Mederios (13 saves), and Cole Mead (9 saves). 

Whitesboro was led by Daniel Obernesser (1 goal & 1 assist), Michael Mazzei (1 goal), Collin Aceto (1 goal), Brentin Foster (1 goal), Gavin Aceto (1 goal), Marco Benedetto (1 assist), Luke Johnson (1 assist), and Casey Clausen (31 saves). 

Corland-Homer will now look forward to hosting Oswego at the JM McDonald Sports Complex in Cortland this upcoming Monday (January 29th) at 7pm. 

Varsity Wrestling: Cortland vs. Ithaca

The Cortland Purple Tigers competed in a dual match against Ithaca Thursday evening. Cortland lost the match with a team score of 54-18.

The Homer Trojans competed against Bishop Grimes at Hi-Lanes Thursday afternoon.

The McGraw Lady Eagles fell to Onondaga in four sets at McGraw high school, bringing their record down to 4-6. 

Note: stats of the match were not made available by the time this article was written. 

According to McGraw’s athletic calendar, the Lady Eagles will play in a tournament this Saturday (January 27th) at Cincinnatus high school. Other teams competing in the tournament will be Cincinnatus, Brookfield, DeRuyter, and Stockbridge Valley. The tournament is scheduled to start at 8:30am.
