Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (January 26th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Friday’s events:

Varsity Track & Field: Homer vs. Multiple Teams (Friday Night Throws Homer Invitational)

The Homer Trojans hosted the Friday Night Throws Homer Invitational at the JM McDonald Sports Complex on Friday. 

Here are some highlights from both the Homer boys’ and girls’ teams:

Homer Boys

  • Tasker Dennis had personal best throws in the weight throw event (Result - 49’11.25”) and the shot put event (Result - 40’10”)
  • Anderson Lowell had personal best throws in both the shot put event (Result - 39’0”) and the weight throw event (Result - 30’5.5”)

Homer Girls

  • Molly McMasters broke the Homer school weight throw record to place 5th overall (Result - 36’6.25”). She also came in 3rd place in the shot put event with a personal best throw (Result -  30’11.5”)
  • Hannah Bouwens broke the Homer Junior class record in the weight throw event (Result - 34’7.5”). She also placed 5th in the shot put event with a personal best throw (Result - 29’9.75”)
  • Olivia Congdon had personal best throws in both the shot put event (Result - 25’ 7.75”) and the weight throw event (Result - 25’ 6.75”)
  • Ellie Ensign had a personal best throw in the shot put event  (24’10”)
  • Lizzie O’Donnell had a personal best throw in the weight throw event (Result - 26’4.75”)

Varsity Girls Wrestling: Homer & Marathon (New York State girls wrestling invitational)

A couple of local wrestlers competed at the second annual New York State girls wrestling invitational on Friday. The annual event took place at the SRC Arena in Syracuse. 

Both Lilly Sorenson (Homer) and Melodie Sutton (Marathon) placed on the podium in their respective weight classes.

Varsity Girls Volleyball: Cincinnatus vs. Sherburne-Earlville

The Cincinnatus Lady Lions beat Sherburne-Earlville in three straight sets Friday night, improving their overall record of 12-2. 

Cincinnatus was led by Kaedence Latta (4 kills, 11 digs, 20 assists & 1 ace), Allyson St.Germain (13 kills, 11 digs & 1 ace), Cassia Schuyler (17 digs), Madison Stover (4 digs, 1 assist & 3 aces), Madelyn Pittsley (4 kills & 1 ace), Payton Gerrard (1 kill & 3 digs), Lucy Finch (3 kills), and Kayle Brenchley (1 kill).

Cincinnatus was scheduled to host a tournament this morning at 8:30am against McGraw, Brookfield, DeRuyter, and Stockbridge Valley. 

Cincinnatus' next regular season match will be played at Cincinnatus high school against Faith Heritage on Monday (January 29th) at 7pm.  

Varsity Boys Basketball: Cortland vs. Homer

The Homer boys basketball team defeated their county rival Cortland with a score of 48-20 at Cortland junior-senior high school Friday night. 

With this result, Homer improved to a 7-6 record, while Cortland fell to 4-11. 

Homer was led by Max Franco (14 points), Kaden Durham (8 points), and Mitchell Earle (7 points). 

Cortland was led by Owen Michales (6 points) and Caden Albright (4 points). 

Up next, Homer will play on the road against Westhill this upcoming Tuesday (January 30th) at 6:30pm, while Cortland plays Chittenango on the road on Tuesday (January 30th) at 7pm. 

Varsity Boys Basketball: Marathon vs. Union Springs

The Marathon Olympians lost 54-46 against Union Springs, bringing their record down to 5-9. 

Marathon was led by Zachary Birdsall (19 points), Jacob Byron (7 points), Bryce Hartman (6 points), and Bode Carter (6 points). 

Union Springs was led by Aaron Johnson (21 points), Collin Park (12 points), and Luke Parker (10 points). 

Marathon’s next game will be played at Marathon high school against Oxford Academy on Monday (January 29th) at 7:15pm. 

Varsity Boys Basketball: Cincinnatus vs. Madison

The Cincinnatus Lions improved to an overall record of 6-9 after defeating Madison with a score of 51-47 Friday night.

Varsity Girls Basketball: Marathon vs. Union Springs

The Marathon Lady Olympians fell to Union Springs with a score of 56-44 at Marathon high school Friday evening. With this loss, Marathon now holds a 9-4 record. 

Marathon was led by Abby Ensign (16 points), Addison Oram (13 points), Audrey Ensign (7 points), Anna Hoyt (5 points), and Catherine Newkirk (3 points). 

Union Springs was led by Jennifer Daum (23 points), Madison Kalet (14 points), and Allie Parker (10 points). 

Marathon will look to bounce back on Tuesday (January 30th) as they play on the road against Odessa Montour Central at 7:45pm.
