A couple of local wrestlers competed at the second annual New York State girls wrestling invitational on Friday. The annual event took place at the SRC Arena in Syracuse.
The Homer girls’ team had three wrestlers competing at the event, while Marathon had one wrestler taking on the mat.
Lilly Sorenson, who placed 2nd at last year’s tourney in the 185-pound weight class, ended up competing in a different weight class this year.
Lilly competed in the 165-pound bracket at this year's invitational, and ended up coming in 4th place.
Molly Sorenson competed at the 145-pound weight class, and Gracie Newman participated in the 132-pound weight bracket.
Alisa Gonzalez (138-pounds) who was listed as an alternate for the Lady Trojans, was not able to see the mat.
“I think the team did pretty well,” said Homer head coach Anna Cummings. “The girls definitely got some experience. This tournament is completely different than last year. The quality has gotten so much better. There are a lot of lessons that were learned, but overall the girls did pretty good and I am proud of them. Making it here is not an easy task.”
“I plan on continuing practices during the off-season,” added coach Cummings. “We're Looking to grow our section and create opportunities for the girls. So there will be different nights and different locations for the girls to go to off-season stuff. The off-season plays a huge role.”
Marathon’s Melodie Sutton made her second appearance at the state invitational, and placed 6th overall at the 114-pound weight class. Sutton did not place at last year’s invitational.
