Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (January 31st)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Wednesday’s events:

Varsity Track & Field: Homer vs. Multiple Teams (OHSL League Championship)

The Homer Trojans competed in the OHSL League Championship Meet at the SRC Arena in Syracuse Wednesday evening. 

A total of 13 teams competed in the Division I OHSL League Championship Meet. 

According to Homer head coach George Schneider, the “first and second place finishers earned First Team and Second Team All-League Honors, respectively.”

Here are some highlights from both the Homer boys’ and girls’ teams:

Homer Boys

  • Gunnar Tyrrell came in 4th place in the 55 meter dash (Time - 6.94). His performance was a personal best 
  • Tasker Dennis placed 5th in the weight throw event (Result - 47’9.5”). He also came in 6th place in the shot put event (Result - 40’3.75”)
  • Homer’s 4x200 meter relay team (Logan Griffin, Gunnar Tyrrell, Anderson Lowell & Tristyn Henkel) finished in 5th place with an official time of 1:44.16
  • Damian Brown placed 6th in the 3,200 meter run (Time - 11:15.90)

Homer Girls

  • Ingrid Aagaard won 1st place in the 1,000 meter run (Time - 3:15.99). She also placed 2nd in the 1,500 meter run (Time - 5:09.47). Her 1,500 meter time was a personal best.
  • Izzy Tutino placed 4th in the 55 meter dash (Time - 7.81). Her performance was a personal best
  • Hannah Bouwens came in 4th place in the weight throw event (Result - 35’1”)
  • Homer’s 4x200 meter relay team (Izzy Tutino, Ingrid Aagaard, Caitlin McCloy & Mikayla Smith) finished in 4th place with  an official time of 1:58.08.
  • Molly McMasters placed 5th in the weight throw event (Result - 33’8”). She also came in 6th place in the shot put event (Result - 28’6.5”).
  • Homer’s 4x400 meter relay team (Caitlin McCloy, Amelia Wagner, Mia Knight & Emma Effinger) placed 5th with an official time of 4:45.60.
  • Sophie Kennett ran a personal best time of 10.09 seconds in the 55 hurdles, qualifying her for the sectional championships.

Varsity Track & Field: Cortland vs. Multiple Teams (OHSL League Championship)

The Cortland Purple Tigers competed in the OHSL League Championship Meet Wednesday evening. 

A total of 13 teams competed in the Division I OHSL League Championship Meet. 

Here are some highlights from both the Cortland boys’ and girls’ teams:

Cortland Boys

  • Jack Phelan finished in 2nd place in both the long jump event (Result - 19’2.25”) and the triple jump event (Result - 41’7”). He also came in 6th place in the 55 meter dash (Time - 6.99)
  • Bryan Honan won 1st place in the weight throw event (Result - 57’8.50”). He also placed 2nd in the shot put event (Result - 49’8.50”)
  • Michael Dearie finished in 3rd place in both the shot put event (Result - 44’2.75”) and the weight throw event (Result - 56’1”)

Cortland Girls

  • Rileigh Madden came in 4th place in the pole vault event (Result - 8’0”)
  • Isabella Sisting finished in 6th place in the 300 meter run (Time - 46.19)
  • Morgann Doane placed 6th in the triple jump event (Result - 30’11.25”)

Varsity Girls Basketball: McGraw vs. Otselic Valley

The McGraw Lady Eagles improved to a 6-8 record after beating Otselic Valley at McGraw high school with a score of 33-25. 

McGraw was led by Hannah Wilson (16 points, 8 rebounds & 2 steals), Lexi McCall (10 points, 8 rebounds, 1 assist & 1 steal), Madison Sweeney (2 points, 14 rebounds, 1 steal & 1 block), Leah Terwilliger (4 points, 5 rebounds & 1 steal), and Heather Magee (1 point, 6 rebounds & 5 steals). 

Otselic Valley was led by Emma Rooker (8 points), Miranda Hackett (7 points), Abiana White (4 points), Gracie Rooker (3 points), and Riley Bartlett (2 points).

Up next, McGraw will host Madison at McGraw high school on Monday (February 5th) at 6pm. 

Varsity Boys Basketball: McGraw vs. Hamilton

The McGraw Eagles lost 69-40 against Hamilton Wednesday evening, making them fall to an overall record of 9-4. 

McGraw was led by Mason Allen (12 points), Dylan Truman (10 points), Caleb Epp (8 points), Riley VanLiew (4 points), Jaydon Bassett (3 points), Calob Sutton (2 points), and Thomas Lea (1 point).

Hamilton was led by Bryce Wright (17 points), Drew Baker (17 points), Luke Jackson (15 points), Teddy Freeth (10 points), Gavin Snyder (4 points), Dom Mensche (2 points), Luke Langel (2 points), Andreas Cardelus-Watkins (2 points).

McGraw’s next game will be played on the road against Otselic Valley this Friday (February 2nd) at 7:15pm.
