Update on shooting investigation in Cortland

On January 29, 2024, Cortland County Deputies from the civil division were attempting service at 171 Homer Avenue in the City of Cortland. The Deputies were confronted at the door by a male subject with gun, and the Cortland City Police Department and State Police responded to assist.

Multiple unsuccessful attempts were made to deescalate the situation and the subject fired upon the Officers. Gunfire was exchanged within the residence and the subject was struck.  The subject was treated on scene by EMS and then transported to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, where he currently remains in stable condition.

No Officers were hurt and the State Police have assumed control of the investigation.
The State Police thank the Cortland community for their patience while this matter is investigated, and more information will be made available in the near future.
