Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (February 6th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Tuesday’s events:

Varsity Track & Field: Cortland vs. Multiple Teams (Section III Class A Championships)

The Cortland Purple Tigers competed in the Section III Class A championship meet at Onondaga Community College Tuesday evening. 

According to Cortland head coach Luke Schweider, two of Cortland’s student athletes won 1st place at their respective events. Bryan Honan won the weight throw event and Jack Phelan won the triple jump event. 

Here are some highlights from both the Cortland boys’ and girls’ teams: 

Cortland Boys

  • Jack Phelan won 1st place in the triple jump event (Result - 42’5.25”)
  • Bryan Honan won 1st place in the weight throw event (Result - 54’10”). He also placed 2nd in the shot put event (Result - 45’2.75”)
  • Michael Dearie came in 2nd place in the weight throw event (Result - 54’7.75”). He also placed 3rd in the shot put event (Result - 44’2.50”)

Cortland Girls

  • Rileigh Madden tied for 3rd place in the pole vault event (Result - 8’0”). She also came in 4th place in the long jump event (Result - 15’5.25”)
  • Ashley Merritt tied for 3rd place in the pole vault event (Result - 8’0”)
  • Campbell Bush placed 6th in the 55 meter hurdles (Time - 9.95)
  • Alivia Reif came in 5th place in the shot put event (Result - 26’3.5”)
  • Isabella Sisting broke a school record in the 55 meter dash after running it in 7.87 seconds to come in 8th place

Varsity Girls Basketball: Cortland vs. Mexico

The Cortland girls basketball team improved to an overall record of 16-1 after beating Mexico with a score of 44-16. 

Cortland was led by Valerosa Gambitta (14 points), Claire Turner (11 points), Katie Harris (8 points), Zee-Anna Sweat-Rice (3 points), Lily Yang (2 points), Lillian Tinker (2 points), Kartyr Hubbard (2 points), and Aubree Larkin (2 points).

Mexico was led by Olivia DeStevens (4 points), Giana Cutuli (4 points), Adriana DiManto (3 points), Ella Blunt (2 points), Allie Poissant (2 points), and Caprice Cutuli (1 point).

“A big league win and down a key player (Kendall Mack),” said Cortland head coach Janice Meyer. “Katie Harris stepped up huge in filling out the point guards’ role today. Playing smart, stepping up on defense and getting comfortable running the offense. Kartyr Hubbard did all the right things defensive and attacking constantly on offense. Claire and Val did their thing!” 

Cortland’s next game will be played at Cortland junior-senior high school this Friday (February 9th) against Norwich. Tip off is at 6:45pm. 

Varsity Girls Basketball: Homer vs. ITC Syracuse

The Homer Lady Trojans lost a close game against ITC Syracuse with a score of 58-56. With this result, Homer has fallen to an overall record of 4-12. 

Homer was led by Lauren Franco (18 points), Isabelle Small (10 points), Elizabeth McCloy (7 points), Kaylee Darling (6 points), Elia Spanbauer (5 points), Madison Morgan (5 points), Anya Gofkowski (3 points), and Brayden Partigianoni (2 points). 

Note: ITC Syracuse’s stats were not made available by the time this article was written. 

Up next, Homer will play on the road against Oneonta this Saturday (February 10th) at 12:45pm. 

Varsity Girls Basketball: Marathon vs. Southern Cayuga

The Marathon Lady Olympians won 33-31 against Southern Cayuga, improving to an overall record of 11-5 Tuesday night. 

Marathon was led by Kendre Euson (10 points), Addison Oram (9 points), Catherine Newkirk (8 points), and Anna Hoyt (6 points).

Southern Cayuga was led by Emily Prince (11 points), Norah McCarthy (9 points), Circe Perez (6 points), Erika Black (3 points), and Lily Holden (2 points). 

Marathon is now scheduled to play Oxford Academy on the road this Thursday (February 8th) at 7:15pm. 

Varsity Boys Basketball: Homer vs. ITC Syracuse

The Homer boys basketball team fell to an overall record of 8-8 after losing to ITC Syracuse with a score of 62-45.

Homer was led by Wyatt Wilbur (19 points), Kaden Durham (8 points), Mitchell Earle (8 points), Tyler Van Etten (6 points), and Max Franco (4 points). 

ITC Syracuse was led by Antwan Aiken Jr (23 points), Tyquanne Harris (17 points), Jaylen Dixie-Wade (14 points), Nyquan Gilbert (7 points), Ja'bri Blunt (5 points), Brian Hall (5 points), Lamar Watts (4 points), Marshon Scott (3 points), Tyquan Thomas (2 points), and Christian Perry (2 points).

Homer’s next game is scheduled to be played on the road against Cazenovia this Friday (February 9th) at 7pm. 

Varsity Boys Basketball: McGraw vs. Madison

The McGraw Eagles beat Madison with a score of 46-42 on Tuesday, improving their overall record of 10-5. 

McGraw was led by Caleb Epp (16 points), Jaydon Bassett (10 points), Calob Sutton (5 points), Dylan Truman (5 points), Mason Allen (4 points), Blair Mulcahy (3 points), and Riley VanLiew (3 points).

Madison was led by Jacob Burns (14 points), Justin LaMunion (9 points), Malloy Brouillette (8 points), Gage Saltern (5 points), Landyn Smith (2 points), Zach Leuenberger (2 points), and Lucas Neff (2 points).

Up next, McGraw will host county rival Cincinnatus at McGraw high school this Thursday (February 8th) at 7pm. 

Varsity Boys Basketball: Marathon vs. Southern Cayuga

The Marathon Olympians improved to an overall record of 9-9 after beating Southern Cayuga with a score of 41-40. 

Marathon was led by Jacob Byron (17 points), Zachary Birdsall (10 points), Colton Oram (4 points), Camdyn Kashuba (4 points), Austin Poth (4 points), and Blake Birdsall (2 points).

Southern Cayuga was led by Daniel Davis (16 points), John Kreydatus (9 points), Kyler Colton (7 points), Aidan Sheils (6 points), and Jordan Heiman (2 points). 

Marathon is now scheduled to play on the road against Moravia Central this Friday (February 9th) at 7:15pm. 

Varsity Boys Basketball: Cortland vs. Mexico

The Cortland Purple Tigers fell to Mexico with a score of 69-44 Tuesday night on the road. With this result, Cortland now holds a 4-15 record.

Varsity Ice Hockey: Cortland-Homer vs. Christian Brothers Academy (CBA)

The Cortland-Homer Golden Eagles fell to a 3-17 record after losing to CBA with a score of 7-0. 

Cortland-Homer was led by Jack Mederios (39 saves) and Cole Mead (3 saves).

CBA was led by James Stanton (2 goals & 1 assist), Logan Novak (1 goal & 2 assists), Jack Dement (2 goals), Quinn Wimer (1 goal & 1 assist), Ryan Hayden (1 goal), Jacob Dubrey (1 assist), Griffon Filighera (1 assist), and Justin Buffum (21 saves). 

This was Cortland-Homer’s last scheduled game of the season.
