Cortland’s Avery Canzano (left) & Wyatt Tinker (right) qualified for the New York State Wrestling Tournament.
Both the Cortland and Homer wrestling teams competed in the Section III Division II Championships on Saturday (February 10th). The tournament took place at Onondaga Community College’s SRC Arena.
Cortland entered two wrestlers (Avery Canzano & Wyatt Tinker) in the tournament.
Homer entered a total of seven wrestlers (Patrick Maslin, Hunter Lines, Dominic Burlingame, Colin Murphy, Christopher Slade, Owen Burhans & Jack Brown) in the tournament.
Both Cortland’s Avery Canzano & Wyatt Tinker placed in the top three of their weight classes, helping them qualify for the upcoming state tournament taking place in Albany.
Canzano entered the tournament as the No.1 seed in the 190-pound weight class, and ended up placing 2nd after losing to the No. 2 seed Trent True of Holland Patent in the championship match.
Tinker entered the tournament as the No.4 seed in the 160-pound weight class. He placed 3rd overall following his third place match win against Henry Smith of Jordan-Elbridge.
According to Cortland head coach Clint Morse, “Cortland has not had a state rep since 2013, when Zack Alexander received a wildcard bid to states. Cortland has not had people go to states in the same year, since 1972. That year Dick Meldrim and Larry Hinkle represented Cortland at the state tournament.”
The State tournament will be held at the MVP Arena in Albany on Friday and Saturday (February 23rd & 24th).
Both Homer’s Hunter Lines and Jack Brown placed 4th overall at their respective weight classes, but were not able to qualify for states.
