YWCA Cortland invites community members to participate in the 2024 Racial Justice ChallengeRegistration is open and ongoing for this free month-long virtual learning opportunity that explores a different equity and social justice topic each week. Participants will receive content to engage with each weekday, April 1 – 29, via a website or mobile app; they may register and join the Challenge at any time.

“The YWCA Racial Justice Challenge is designed to create dedicated time and space to build more effective social justice habits, particularly those dealing with issues of race, power, privilege, and leadership,” said Kelly Tobin, YWCA Cortland’s Executive Director. “The Challenge works to foster personal reflection, encourage social responsibility, and motivate participants to identify ways to dismantle racism and other forms of discrimination.”

For four weeks on weekdays, daily challenge activities, such as reading an article, listening to a podcast, reflecting on personal experience, etc., are posted in the Challenge app (available from the Apple or Google Play stores)  and website, allowing participants to connect with one another and discover how racial and social injustice impact our communities. Click to see screenshots of the Challenge sign-up and welcome pages.

Each week covers a different topic related to equity and social justice. The 2024 topics include Bodily AutonomyFinancial EmpowermentGun Violence, and Transportation.

Previously known as the Stand Against Racism Challenge or 21-Day Racial Equity and Social Justice Challenge, they YWCA Racial Justice Challenge was developed by YWCA Greater Cleveland in 2019. YWCA USA is partnering again with YWCAs across the country to offer this unique virtual learning community to participants all over the U.S.

The Racial Justice Challenge is an action component for the national Until Justice Just Is (previously known as the Stand Against Racism) campaign, which runs throughout the month of April to raise awareness of systemic racism and how each of us can take action to advance justice. YWCA Cortland earlier this year held for the first time two sessions of Kingian Nonviolence Conflict Reconciliation training to further broaden participation in this campaign.

YWCA Cortland’s participation in the Until Justice Just Is campaign is made possible with local support from Visions Federal Credit Union and other business sponsors.

YWCA Cortland wants to thank and acknowledge Dr. Eddie Moore Jr., Debby Irving, and Dr. Marguerite Penick for their leadership in the interest of racial equity as exhibited in their 21 Day Racial Equity and Habit Building Challenge and the movement they helped to initiate. YWCA USA’s content is independently designed, written, and curated by YWCA USA staff as part of racial equity and social justice programs offered to the community.
