Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (April 9th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Tuesday’s events:

Varsity Softball: McGraw vs. Cincinnatus

The Cincinnatus Lady Lions beat their county rival McGraw with a score of 14-8 Tuesday evening. 

With this result Cincinnatus improved to an overall record of 1-1, while McGraw fell to 0-2. 

Cincinnatus was led by Lucy Finch (3 total runs, 1 home-run, 2 hits & 2 RBI’s), Madison Stover (2 runs, 2 hits & 3 RBI’s), Payton Gerrard (2 runs, 2 hits, 1 RBI & 5 strikeouts thrown), Rachael Standish (3 runs & 2 hits), Kaylee Brenchley (1 run, 2 hits & 1 RBI), Hannah Ellerson (1 run, 1 hit & 3 RBI’s), Addison Stith (1 run & 2 RBI’s), Mandi Waltz (1 run & 1 hit), and Neveah Billings (4 strikeouts thrown).

McGraw was led by Katelynn Millard (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Leah Terwilliger (2 runs & 1 hit), Haylee Bassett (3 hits & 3 RBI’s), Josslyn Eaton (2 runs), Lexi McCall (2 runs), Remington Stull (1 run, 1 hit & 1 strikeout thrown), and Abby Lakie (2 strikeouts thrown). 

Up next, Cincinnatus will play Sherburne-Earlville on the road on Thursday (April 11th) at 4:30pm; while McGraw hosts Stockbridge Valley at Blodgett Mills on Friday (April 12th) at 4:30pm.

The Cortland Lady Tigers won their first game of the regular season against their county rival Homer with a score of 27-3. This was also Homer’s first game of the season. 

Cortland was led by Brenna Hogan (4 runs, 4 hits, 4 RBI’s & 8 strikeouts thrown), Sophie Mayer (5 runs, 2 hits & 2 RBI’s), Claire Turner (2 runs, 5 hits & 5 RBI’s), Madalyn Thompson (3 runs, 3 hits & 4 RBI’s), Danica Peck (3 runs & 2 hits), Lauren Mott (2 runs, 1 hit & 3 RBI’s), Ava Turner (3 runs, 2 hits & 1 RBI), Gracie-Jo Homza (2 runs, 2 hits & 2 RBI’s), Madison Thompson (1 run, 1 hit & 2 RBI’s), Abigail Romans (2 runs & 1 hit), and Jadyn Willey (1 hit).  

Homer was led by Khloie Young (2 runs, 2 hits & 1 RBI), Emily Petrella (1 run, 2 hits & 1 RBI & 1 strikeout thrown), Allyson Verfuss (1 hit), Samantha Sovocool (1 hit), Alexandria Kellaway (1 hit), Payton Coon (1 hit), and MyaLynne Riccardi  (1 strikeout thrown).

Both Cortland and Homer are scheduled to play each other again today (April 10th) at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex at 4pm. 

Varsity Softball: Marathon vs. Moravia (Double-Header)

The Marathon Lady Olympians played a double-header against Moravia Tuesday evening. Marathon won the first game, but lost in the second game. 

With these results, Marathon now holds an overall record of 2-1. 

Game #1 

Marathon won the first game of the double-header with a score of  7-0 against Moravia. 

According to Marathon head coach Jamie Bush, Izzy Conklin pitched a no hitter in the game. Conklin also recorded 2 hits, while teammates Marissa Allen also recorded 2 hits, and Cassandra Forrest, Melodie Sutton & Bonnie-Jade Kinsman all recorded 1 hit each as well.

Game #2 

Marathon lost with a score of 2-9 in the second game of the double-header. 

Conklin would pitch 3 more scoreless innings before Moravia found home plate,” stated coach Bush. “Several defensive miss-cues in the fourth let the game get away from us.” 

Marathon’s next game will be played at Marathon’s Appleby Elementary school on Thursday (April 11th) against Moravia. The game will begin at 4:30pm.

The Cortland Purple Tigers got a 7-0 shutout win over the Homer Trojans Tuesday afternoon. With this result, Cortland improved to a 4-0 record, while Homer fell to 1-2. 

Cortland was led by Cal Albright (1 run, 1 hit & 11 strikeouts thrown), Ethan Johnson (2 runs, 1 hit & 3 RBI’s), Owen Johnson (2 hits & 2 RBI’s), Zach Muir (2 hits & 1 RBI), Caden Albright (2 runs), Danny Jackson (1 run), Antonio Terrazas (1 hit), and Connor Browngardt (1 run).

Homer was led by Tristan Allen (3 strikeouts thrown), Evan Sullivan (1 hit & 1 strikeout thrown), Andrew Kline (1 hit), Chris Boylan (1 hit), and Maddox Johnson (1 strikeout thrown). 

Up next, Cortland and Homer will play each other once again this Thursday (April 11th) at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex at 4:30pm.  

Varsity Baseball: McGraw vs. George Junior Republic

The McGraw Eagles defeated George Junior Republic with a score of 21-0 at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex Tuesday afternoon. 

Not only did McGraw improve to an overall record of 4-1 after winning the game, but Jaydon Bassett also earned his 100th career strikeout thrown in the game.

McGraw’s next game is scheduled to be played against Otselic Valley-Cincinnatus at Otselic Valley high school this upcoming Friday (April 12th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Baseball: Marathon vs. Moravia (Double-Header) 

The Marathon Olympians played a double-header against Moravia on the road Tuesday afternoon. 

Marathon lost both games of the double-header, making them fall to an overall record of 0-2.

Moravia was led by Dillon Palmer (1 run & 8 strikeouts thrown), Luke Landis (1 run & 1 hit), Jairen Francis (1 hit & 1 RBI), Thomas Palmer (1 RBI), Robert Balk (2 hits), and Frederick Hess IV (1 hit).

Marathon is now scheduled to host Moravia at Marathon high school this upcoming Thursday (April 11th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Girls Lacrosse: Cortland vs. Chittenango

The Cortland varsity girls lacrosse team lost against Chittenango with a score of 12-5 on the road Tuesday evening. 

With this loss, Cortland has fallen to an overall record of 1-3. 

Note: stats of the game were not made available by the time this article was written. 

The Lady Tigers are now scheduled to play Westhill on the road this Friday (April 12th) at 6:30pm. 

Varsity Boys Golf: Marathon vs. Groton

The Marathon Olympians played Groton at the Maple Hill Golf Course on Tuesday. 

Marathon lost the match with a team score of 209-198. (Note: the lowest score in golf wins).

Varsity Track & Field: Cortland vs. Mexico

The Cortland Purple Tigers competed in a dual meet against Mexico at Cortland junior-senior high school on Tuesday. 

The Cortland boys’ team lost with a team score of 66-70; while the Cortland girls’ team won 71-55. 

Here are some Cortland highlights from Tuesday’s meet: 

Cortland Boys

  • Cortland’s 4x800 meter relay team (Jordan Brown, Spenser Dodds, Feodor Kalytyuk & Jacob Mones) won 1st place with an official time of 9:26.7
  • Iniko Abani won 1st place in the 110 meter high hurdles (Time - 16.5), the 200 meter run (Time - 23.9), and the high jump event (Result - 5’6”)
  • Jack Phelan won 1st place in the 100 meter dash (Time - 12.0), the 400 meter run (Time - 57.7), and the triple jump event (Result - 39’2.5”)
  • Liam Burns came in 2nd place in both the 400 meter hurdles (Time - 70.7) and the triple jump event (Result - 34’2.5”). He also placed 3rd in the 100 meter dash (Time - 12.4)
  • Cortland’s 4x100 meter relay team (Iniko Abani, Liam Burns, Ryan Burns, and Jack Phelan) won 1st place with an official time of 46.8
  • Spenser Dodds finished in 2nd place in the 800 meter run (Time - 2:20.4)
  • Cortland’s 4x400 meter relay team came in 2nd place with a time of 4:28.2
  • Bryan Honan won 1st place in both the shot put event (Result - 48’0.25”) and the discus throw event (Result - 141’8”)
  • Michael Dearie got 2nd place in the shot put event (Result - 40’7”)
  • Riley Olson placed 3rd in the shot put event (Result - 87’10”)
  • Mick Maloney came in 3rd place in the long jump event (Result - 15’9.5”)
  • Ryan Burns placed 3rd in the high jump event (Result - 5’2”)

Cortland Girls

  • Campbell Bush won 1st place in the 100 meter high hurdles (Time - 17.3)
  • Sarah Williams came in 2nd place in the 100 meter high hurdles (Time - 18.8)
  • Kartyr Hubbard placed 2nd in the 400 meter hurdles (Time - 80.9). She also finished in 3rd place in the 100 meter high hurdles (Time - 19.6)
  • Bailey Dintino won 1st place in both the 100 meter run (Time - 13.4) and the 200 meter run (Time - 28.6)
  • Ruby Mullally won 1st place in the 1,500 meter run (Time - 6:13.2)
  • Cortland’s 4x100 meter relay team won 1st place with an official time of 53.3
  • Peyton Burns came in 2nd place in both the 400 meter run (Time - 75.5) and the high jump event (Result - 4’2”)
  • Quinn Dodds finished in 3rd place in the 400 meter run (Time - 75.7)
  • Darah Peck placed 3rd in the 400 meter hurdles (Time - 92.6)
  • Brianna Bergene came in 2nd place in the 800 meter run (Time - 2:55.6)
  • Lealynn O'Brien finished in 3rd place in the 800 meter run (Time - 3:02.6)
  • Isabella Sisting placed 2nd in the 200 meter run (Time - 29.4)
  • Cortland’s 4x400 meter relay team came in 2nd place with an official time of 4:58.7 
  • Alivia Reif placed 2nd in both the shot put event (Result - 23’8”) and the discus throw event (Result - 55’2”)
  • Christina Stanton finished in 3rd place in the discus throw event (Result - 43’6”)
  • Rileigh Madden won 1st place in the pole vault event (Result - 8’0”). She also came in 3rd place in the long jump event (Result - 14’8.5”)
  • Ashley Merritt placed 2nd in the pole vault event (Result - 7’6”)
  • Morgann Doane won 1st place in the triple jump event (Result - 30’5”)
  • Maude Terwilliger came in 2nd place in the triple jump event (Result - 28’7”)

Varsity Boys Tennis: Homer vs. Pulaski

The Homer boys’ tennis team played their first match of the season against Pulaski Tuesday afternoon. 

Homer won the match with a team score of 5-0. 

Here are the results from each match:

  • 1st Singles: Brayden Clark (Homer) defeated Myer Butler (Pulaski) - 6-0 & 6-2
  • 2nd Singles: Drew Cotterill (Homer) beat Ethan Weigel (Pulaski) - 6-0 & 6-1
  • 3rd Singles: Cooper Layaw (Homer) defeated Andrew Cusson (Pulaski) - 6-0 & 6-2
