Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (April 11th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Thursday’s events:

Varsity Girls Golf: Marathon vs. Multiple Teams

The Marathon Lady Olympians competed against multiple teams (Odessa-Montour, Spencer-Van Etten, Lansing, and Corning) at the Hillendale Country Club on Thursday. 

Marathon came in second place overall after scoring a total of 204 points.

Varsity Baseball: Cortland vs. Homer

The Cortland Purple Tigers won their second game in a row against county rival Homer Thursday evening. Homer won the game with a score of 3-0. 

With this result, Cortland improved to an overall record of 5-0, while Homer fell to 1-3. 

Cortland was led by Owen Johnson (1 run & 2 hits), Cal Albright (1 run & 1 RBI), Danny Jackson (1 run), Caden Albright (1 hit & 2 RBI’s), Antonio Terrazas (1 hit & 1 RBI), and Ethan Johnson (4 strikeouts thrown). 

Homer was led by Evan Sullivan (1 hit), Maddox Johnson (1 hit), and Mitchell Earle (8 strikeouts thrown).

Up next, Cortland will play Whitesboro at Whitesboro middle school on Saturday (April 13th) at 11am. On the other hand, Homer’s next game will be played on the road against Chittenango on Tuesday (April 16th) at 5pm.

The Homer Lady Trojans improved to an overall record of 5-1 after defeating Chittenango at Homer high school with a score of 5-4. 

Homer was led by Maria Partis (3 goals & 1 assist), Ella Spanbauer (1 goal & 1 ground ball), Emma Effinger (1 goal), Lilly Sorenson (1 assist & 3 ground balls), Caitlin McCloy (1 ground ball), Gracie Newman (1 ground ball), Taryn Quinn (1 ground ball), Caleigh Stone (1 ground ball), and Aislynn Cobb (6 saves). 

Chittenango was led by Tomi Newkirk (2 goals & 1 ground ball), Gracie Brazell (1 goal & 1 ground ball), Persephone Rohrer (1 goal & 1 ground ball), Caitlyn Sgambellone (2 ground balls), Abby Penfield (2 ground balls & 12 saves), Reese Ferstler (1 ground ball), Dominique Brown (1 ground ball), Bella Nastri (1 ground ball), Anna Lazzaro (1 ground ball), and Alyson Coles (1 ground ball).

Homer’s next game will be played against county rival Cortland at Cortland junior-senior high school on Monday (April 15th) at 6:30pm.

Varsity Boys Tennis: Homer vs. Marcellus

The Homer boys tennis team played on the road against Marcellus Thursday afternoon, where Homer won with a team score of 3-2. 

With this win, Homer improved to an overall record of 2-0. 

Here are the individual results from each match: 

  • 1st singles: Brayden Clark (Homer) defeated Tucker Guerrina (Marcellus) - 3-6, 7-5 & 7(8)-6(6) 
  • 2nd singles: Drew Cotterill (Homer) lost to Michael Devereaux (Marcellus) - 6-0 & 6-0
  • 3rd singles: Cooper Layaw (Homer) beat Owen Fontaine (Marcellus) - 6-0 & 6-2
  • 1st doubles: Caleb Hanson & Max Totman (Homer) lost to William Louer & Liam Lundrigan (Marcellus) - 6-0 & 6-2
  • 2nd doubles: Nicolas Barbieri & Lucas Barbieri (Homer) won against Jakob O'Donnell & Gavin Thompson (Marcellus) - 3-6, 6-4 & 7-5
