Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (April 12th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Friday’s events:

Varsity Track & Field: Cortland vs. Multiple Teams (Tully Co-Ed Spring Invitational 2024)

The Cortland Purple Tigers participated in the “Tully Co-Ed Spring Invitational 2024” at Tully high school Friday evening. 

The Cortland boys’ team placed 10th overall, while the Cortland girls’ team came in 12th overall. 

Cortland also ended up placing 3rd overall in the mixed team scores according to the results on Milesplit

Here are some highlights from both the Cortland boys’ and girls’ teams:

Cortland Boys

  • Bryan Honan placed 2nd in the discus throw event (Result - 137’9”)
  • Michael Dearie finished in 3rd place in the discus throw event (Result - 119’0”)
  • Iniko Abani placed 7th in the 100 meter dash (Time - 12.13)

Cortland Girls

  • Campbell Bush placed 3rd in the 100 meter hurdles (Time - 17.27)
  • Ashley Merritt came in 6th in the pole vault event (Result - 7’0”)
  • Bailey Dintino finished in 10th place in the 100 meter dash (Time - 13.92)
  • Kartyr Hubbard placed 10th in the 100 meter hurdles (Time - 19.14)

Varsity Girls Lacrosse: Cortland vs. Westhill

The Cortland Lady Tigers lost to Westhill with a score of 21-3 on the road Friday evening. With this loss, Cortland fell to an overall record of 1-4. 

Cortland was led by Valerosa Gambitta (3 goals & 1 ground ball), Gabriella Brown (2 ground balls), Elizabeth Slavick (1 ground ball), and Elizabeth Slavick (3 saves). 

Westhill was led by Sophia Lasher (4 goals, 4 assists & 2 ground balls), Kara Rosenberger (2 goals, 1 assist & 2 ground balls), Rosemary Mahoney (3 goals & 2 assists), Nora Fitzgerald (3 goals & 1 assist), Ava Lasher (2 goals & 1 assist), Grace Stroman (2 goals), Kaylin Murphy (2 goals), Aubrey Holowinski (1 goal & 1 assist), Avery Starowicz (1 goal & 1 ground ball), Grace Bergett (1 goal), Evangelina Tarolli (1 ground ball), Siena Jetter (1 ground ball), and Taylor Falcone (1 save). 

Up next, Cortland will play county rival Homer at Cortland junior-senior high school on Monday (April 15th) at 6:30pm. 

Varsity Boys Lacrosse: Cortland vs. Westhill

The Cortland Purple Tigers fell to an overall record of 0-6 after losing to Westhill with a score of 15-0.

Cortland’s next game will be played on the road against LaFayette on Tuesday (April 16th) at 6pm. 

Varsity Softball: Cincinnatus vs. Madison

The Cincinnatus Lady Lions defeated Madison with a score of 25-3 at home Friday afternoon. With this recent win, Cincinnatus improved to a 2-1 record. 

Cincinnatus was led by Neveadh Billings (3 total runs, 1 home-run, 3 hits, 4 RBI’s & 3 strikeouts thrown), Kaylee Brenchley (3 total runs, 1 home-run, 3 hits, 4 RBI’s & 5 strikeouts thrown), Addison Stith (3 runs, 3 hits & 2 RBI’s), Rachael Standish (4 runs, 2 hits & 1 RBI), Hannah Ellerson (2 runs & 3 hits), Payton Gerrard (3 runs, 1 hit, 2 RBI’s & 3 strikeouts thrown), Lucy Finch (3 total runs, 1 home-run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Madison Stover (2 runs, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Mandi Waltz (1 run, 1 hit & 2 RBI’s), Linette Custer (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), and Sailor Stith (1 hit).

Cincinnatus is now scheduled to host Brookfield on Monday (April 15th) at 4:30pm.
