Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (April 26th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Friday events:

Varsity Baseball: Homer vs. Ithaca

The Homer Trojans won 12-2 against Ithaca at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex on Friday. With this win, Homer improved to an overall record of 6-3. 

Homer was led by Mitchell Earle (2 runs, 3 hits & 1 RBI), Evan Sullivan (2 runs, 2 hits & 1 RBI), Tristan Allen (2 hits, 2 RBI’s & 1 strikeout thrown), Maddox Johnson (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Graydon Hickey (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Tyler VanEtten (1 run & 2 hits), Andrew Kline (2 runs & 1 hit), Eli McMahon (1 run & 1 hit), Jack Bertram (1 run), Zachary Henson (1 run), and Max Franco (6 strikeouts thrown). 

Ithaca was led by Isaiah Smith (1 run, 1 hit & 5 strikeouts thrown), Morgan Brenner (1 hit & 1 RBI), Kaleb Kerfoot (1 hit), Julius Milano (1 run), and Caeleb Hall (5 strikeouts thrown). 

Homer’s next game will be played at Onondaga Community College on Monday (April 29th) against Westhill. The game will begin at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Baseball: Otselic Valley-Cincinnatus vs. Town of Webb

Otselic Valley-Cincinnatus won their first game of the season in order to improve to a 1-3 record on Friday. Otselic Valley-Cincinnatus defeated Town of Webb with a score of 18-2. 

Otselic Valley-Cincinnatus was led by Caleb Loomis (4 runs, 2 hits, 2 RBI’s & 2 strikeouts thrown), Braeden Davis (3 runs, 2 hits & 1 RBI), Hunter Rozewski (3 runs & 2 hits), Lukas Schieferstein (3 runs & 1 RBI), Cole Warren (1 run, 2 hits & 4 RBI’s), Troy Miller (1 run, 2 hits, 2 RBI’s & 3 strikeouts thrown), Deven Maxson (1 run & 2 hits), Manuel Gonzalez-Lantaron (1 hit & 1 RBI), and Avram Moses (1 run). 

Town of Webb was led by Michael Gaffney (1 run & 1 hit), Chase Langworthy (1 hit, 1 RBI & 1 strikeout thrown), Gabe Lutz (1 run), Preston Morris (1 hit), Charles LaFavour (1 hit), and Seamus Birtle (6 strikeouts thrown). 

Up next, Otselic Valley-Cincinnatus will host DeRuyter at Otselic Valley high school on Monday (April 29th) at 4pm. 

Varsity Boys Lacrosse: Homer vs. Westhill

The Homer boys lacrosse team has fallen to an overall record of 6-3 after losing to Westhill on the road with a score of 11-6. 

Homer was led by Cooper Swartz (3 goals & 1 ground ball), Daniel Stiles (1 goal, 1 assist & 1 ground ball), Jack Brady (1 goal & 2 ground balls), Liam O'Connor (1 assist), Kaden Durham (1 ground ball), Alexander Votra (1 goal), Brycen Poole (1 ground ball), Christopher Slade (1 ground ball), and Benjamin Bradshaw (14 saves). 

Westhill was led by Jack Hayes (2 goals & 2 assists), Owen Etoll (2 goals & 1 assist), Tommy Pendergast (2 goals & 1 assist), Josh Gratien (2 goals & 1 assist), Charlie DeMore (1 goal, 1 assist & 1 ground ball), Andrew Mondo (1 goal & 1 assist), Teddy DeMore (1 goal), Conor Rose (6 ground balls), Shamus Edlund (3 ground balls), Aiden Amidon (3 ground balls), Roman Valenti (3 ground balls), and Jackson Suddaby (1 ground ball), and Keller O'Hern  (8 saves). 

Homer is now scheduled to be played at Homer high school against Christian Brothers Academy on Thursday (May 2nd) at 7pm. 

Varsity Track & Field: Cortland vs. Multiple Teams (Chittenango Invitational)

The Cortland Purple Tigers competed in the Chittenango Invitational on Friday. 

The Cortland boys team placed 20th out of 22 placing teams, and the Cortland girls team placed 21st out of 21 placing teams. 

Here are some highlights from both the Cortland boys and girls teams: 

Cortland Boys

  • Reed Smith finished in 9th place in the 400 meter hurdles (Time - 1:05.96)
  • Michael Dearie placed 9th in the shot put event (Result - 40’1”)

Cortland Girls

  • Rileigh Madden placed 5th in the pole vault event (Result - 8’6”)
  • Morgann Doane came in 9th place in the triple jump event (Result - 31’6.5”)

Varsity Track & Field: Marathon vs. Multiple Teams (Gerry O'Donnell Invitational)

The Marathon Olympians participated in the Gerry O'Donnell Invitational at Windsor Central School. 

The Marathon boys’ team placed 15th out of 16 placing teams, and the Marathon girls’ team placed 7th out of 14 placing teams. 

Here are some highlights from both the Marathon boys and girls teams: 

Marathon Boys

  • Andrew Edsall placed 4th in the 1,600 meter run (Time - 4:52.08)

Marathon Girls

  • Abigail Trabucco came in 3rd place in the pole vault event (Result - 8’6”). She also placed 5th in the 800 meter run (Time - 2:47.88)
  • Catherine Newkirk placed 2nd in the triple jump event (Result - 32’2.5”). She also came in 4th place in the 100 meter hurdles (Time - 17.34)
  • Addison Oram finished in 3rd place in the high jump event (Result - 4’8”)
