The Cortland County Legislature unanimously approved the authorization for the sheriff’s office to purchase a new boat at its monthly meeting on Thursday.

The county sheriff’s office is purchasing a 2024 MetalCraft Welded Aluminum  21' fast responder boat, which includes a Mercury 250HP outboard motor and an aluminum tandem-axle bunk trailer, for $121,656.

The new boat will replace the old boat that the county sheriff’s office recently sold. According to the resolution from Thursday’s meeting, the old model was a Navigation 1994 Discovery Enforce boat with a Kristi trailer (MDL KD176-18). The resolution noted that the sheriff’s office attempted to repair the old boat, but a “hole in the hull of the boat” could not be completed.

According to the resolution, the 2024 county sheriff’s road patrol budget did not “adequate funds” for the new boat and trailer.

The resolution said that the sheriff’s office, however, received half of the cost from the New York State Navigation Law Enforcement State Aid Program. The rest of the costs are available for coverage by the county’s vehicle repair/replacement reserve fund.
