Local firefighters extinguished a fire on a small construction vehicle in a building, according to a report.

On Wednesday afternoon (May 1), the Virgil Fire Department responded to a skid steer on fire inside of a building on VanDonsel Road. The report noted that the fire “was in close proximity” to fuel tanks and a farmhouse.

Firefighter crews used a deck gun on the apparatus to knock down the fire shortly after 3:30 p.m. Crews stretched out an additional line to overhaul the skid steer and check for potential extension of the fire into the structure of the roof, the report noted. Pressure fans were used to clear the smoke out of the building.

According to the report, the cause of the fire is believed to be from the welding done recently on the skid steer. The report noted that “quick action and teamwork” saved the main building from major damage.

The Cortland, Cortlandville, Dryden and McLean fire departments provided assistance on scene, along with assistance from Cortland County 911.
