Cranfield Wins Boys’ Tennis Sectional Championship; Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (May 21st)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Tuesday’s events:

Varsity Boys Tennis: Cortland (Section III Division II Singles Championship)

Top-seeded Tyler Cranfield of Cortland won the Section III Division II singles championship on Tuesday after beating No.3-seed Evan Lyga of New Hartford in the final round. 

The match was played at Oneida High School. 

Cranfield won the sectional championship match in two straight sets, (6-0) & (6-0). He Is now scheduled to play in the upcoming state championship tournament.  

According to NYSPHSAA, the state tournament will take place at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing (Queens, NY) from Friday (May 31st) to Sunday (June 2nd). The state tournament’s first round will begin at 8am on Friday (May 31st).

The No.5-seeded Cortland Purple Tigers defeated No.12-seed Carthage with a score of 10-3 in the opening round of the Section III Class A playoff tournament.

Up next, Cortland will take on No.4-seed Westhill in the quarterfinal round of sectionals at Westhill high school on Thursday (May 23rd) at 5pm. 

Varsity Baseball: McGraw vs. Copenhagen (1st Round of Sectionals)

The No.5-seeded McGraw Eagles won 12-8 against No.12-seed Copenhagen in the first round of the Section III Class D playoff tournament.

McGraw is now scheduled to play in the sectionals’ quarterfinal round against No.4-seed Poland this upcoming Thursday (May 23rd). The game will be played at Poland Central School at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Baseball: Homer vs. Central Valley Academy (1st Round of Sectionals)

The No.10-seeded Homer Trojans lost in the first round of the Section III Class A playoff tournament against No.7-seed Central Valley Academy (CVA) on Tuesday with a score of 5-0. 

Homer was led by Andrew Kline (1 hit), Max Franco (1 hit), and Mitchell Earle (16 strikeouts thrown). 

According to Homer head coach Robert R. Nasiatka, Homer senior Mitchell Earle finished his career at Homer with “286 K’s (Strikeouts), breaking a 41 year old school record.”  

CVA was led by Landon LaFountain (1 hit & 2 RBI’s), Calvin Jacquays (1 run & 1 hit), Pace Ludwig (2 hits), Tyler Monahan (1 run), Brody Vogel (1 run), Thomas Jacquays (1 run), Lincoln Lynch (1 run), and Logan Judd (1 hit & 9 strikeouts thrown).

Homer ended their season with an overall record of 8-9. 

Varsity Softball: Cortland vs. Oneida (1st Round of Sectionals)

The Cortland Lady Tigers lost in the first round of the Section III Class A playoff tournament against Oneida with a score of 4-3 Tuesday evening at Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex.

Cortland ended their season with an overall record of 7-10.

The No.4-seeded McGraw Lady Eagles won 6-5 against No.13-seed Hamilton in the opening round of the Section III Class D playoff tournament Tuesday evening. 

McGraw was led by Katelynn Millard (1 run & 2 hits), Josslyn Eaton (2 runs, 2 hits & 1 RBI), Leah Terwilliger (1 hit), Haylee Bassett (1 run & 1 hit), Madison Sweeney (1 run), Hannah Wilson (1 run), Camdyn Caperton (1 hit), and Remmington Stull (3 strikeouts thrown). 

Note: Hamilton’s stats were not made available by the time this article was written. 

According to the Section III Class D bracket, McGraw is scheduled to host No.5-seed Oriskany in the quarterfinal round of the tournament at Blodgett Mills on Thursday (May 23rd) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Softball: Marathon vs. Tioga (Sectional Quarterfinals)

The No.8-seeded Marathon Lady Olympians lost in the quarterfinal round of the Section IV Class C playoff tournament against No.1-seed Tioga on Tuesday. 

Marathon lost the game with a score of 26-2. 

“We did our best to try and move the ball around at the plate, but Tioga is a team that can crush the ball if you leave it over the middle of the plate,” stated Marathon head coach Jamie Bush. “It was a good game for the younger players to be in and learn from. The score does not reflect our effort. Tioga is ranked one for a reason and they played like a number one seed. Our bats were cold, but Tioga's were not. We had errors on defense that hurt, but did make some really good plays at times.”

Marathon ended its season with an overall record of 9-13.  

Varsity Girls Lacrosse: Homer vs. Westhill (Sectional Quarterfinals)

The No.6-seeded Homer Lady Trojans lost in the quarterfinals of the Section III Class D playoff tournament with a score of 17-4 against No.3 seed Westhill. 

Homer was led by Maria Partis (2 goals), Eila Spanbauer (2 goals), Lilly Sorenson (1 assist), Isabelle Small (1 ground ball), and Aislynn Cobb (8 saves). 

Westhill’s goals were scored by Kara Rosenberger (4 goals), Sophia Lasher (3 goals), Rosemary Mahoney (2 goals), Grace Stroman (2 goals), Aubrey Holowinski (2 goals), Melissa Mondo (2 goals), Kaylin Murphy (1 goal), and Delaney Goode (1 goal). 

The Lady Trojans ended their season with a 12-6 record.
