Groton man dies from injuries after being struck by vehicle

GROTON, N.Y. — A Groton man who was struck by a vehicle last week while walking on Peru Road has died from his injuries, according to his obituary.

Robert J. Pless, 39, was walking southbound in the middle of the northbound lane in the area of 692 Peru Road last Wednesday when he was struck by a vehicle being driven by Paul E. Miller, 31, of Freeville. Police have said Miller was unable to avoid hitting Pless and authorities do not plan to pursue criminal charges against him.

Pless was airlifted to Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, where he was listed in critical condition, according to state police. He died at the hospital on Saturday, according to his obituary.

Pless was born in Cortland and graduated from Homer High School. He previously worked at Preston Power Sweepers in Cortland, his obituary reads.

He is survived by his parents, his fiancée, Kelly Boardman, their stepchildren, and several siblings. Funeral services were held at the Zirbel Funeral Home in Groton on Wednesday.
