Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Wednesday’s events:

Varsity Golf: Cortland vs. Chittenango

The Cortland Purple Tigers played against Chittenango Wednesday morning. Cortland won the overall match over Chittenango with a team score 233-241. (Reminder: lowest score in golf wins).

Varsity Golf: Homer vs. Marcellus

The Homer Trojans lost a close match against Marcellus with a team score of 241-222 on Wednesday. (Reminder: lowest score in golf wins).

Varsity Girls Soccer: McGraw vs. Moravia (McGraw Girls Soccer Tournament)

The McGraw varsity girls soccer team won their first game of the season against Moravia with a score of 2-0 on Wednesday. The game was also the first round of the McGraw Girls Soccer Tournament.

The Lady Eagles will now host the championship game of the tournament at McGraw’s Bennett St. Field on Friday (September 1st) at 10am against Bainbridge-Guilford. 

Varsity Girls Soccer: Marathon vs. Fabius-Pompey (Fabius-Pompey Sports Boosters Kickoff Tournament)

The Marathon Lady Olympians lost a close game against Fabius-Pompey in the championship game of the Fabius-Pompey Sports Boosters Kickoff Tournament on Wednesday. 

Fabius-Pompey’s Peyton Taylor scored the only goal of the game about ten minutes into the first half of the game. 

With this result, Marathon has started their regular season with an overall record of 1-1. 

Marathon’s next game will be played on the road against Odessa Montour Central at 7pm tonight (August 31st). 

Varsity Boys Soccer: McGraw vs. Moravia (McGraw Boys Soccer Tournament)

The McGraw Eagles defeated Moravia in the first round of the McGraw Boys Soccer Tournament with a score of 2-0.

The Eagles will take on Edmeston in the championship game at McGraw’s Bennett St. Field on Friday, September 1st, 2023 at 12pm (noon). 

Varsity Boys Soccer: Homer vs. Jordan-Elbridge

The Homer Trojans started their season off with a 1-0 record after beating Jordan-Elbridge on the road Wednesday evening. Homer won the game with a score of 4-1. 

“After taking a lead mid-way through the first half, JE equalized before halftime,” said Homer head coach Christopher Guay. “The boys settled down and took control in the second half.  Excellent all around team effort. Great ball possession, movement and confidence on the ball. The boys played some great soccer. All 15 guys stepped-up and played really well from the get go.”

Homer was led by Ian Small (2 goals & 1 assist), Cooper Van Dee (1 goal), Kyler Crump (1 goal & 3 assists), Oliver Kida (3 saves), and Levi Guay (2 saves).

Homer’s next game will be played at home against Groton this Friday (September 1st) at 5pm.
