Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (September 5th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Tuesday’s events:

Varsity Girls Soccer: Cortland vs. Chittenango

The Cortland Lady Purple Tigers lost a close game in overtime against Chittenango Tuesday evening with a score of 1-2. With this loss, Cortland now holds a 1-1 record. 

Cortland was led by Maude Terwilliger (1 goal), Aubree Larkin (1 assist), and Lauren Mott (11 saves). 

Chittenango was led by Abby Scheidelman (2 goals) and Rebecca Baldwin (10 saves). 

Cortland is now scheduled to play in the “DeRuyter Girls Booster Blast Off Tournament” at DeRuyter high school on Thursday (September 7th) at 3pm. 

Varsity Girls Soccer: Homer vs. Westhill

The Homer Lady Trojans fell 0-2 at home against Westhill Tuesday night. This was Homer’s first loss of the regular season, which leaves them with a 2-1 overall record.

Homer will look to bounce back from this loss as they take on Syracuse City at home this Thursday (September 7th) at 5:30pm. 

Varsity Girls Soccer: McGraw vs. Madison

The McGraw Lady Eagles defeated Madison 1-0 with a late second half goal in order to improve to a 2-1 record. 

The only goal of the game was scored by Karissa Moffitt with just a bit over two minutes left in the game. 

McGraw goalie Heather Magee made 6 saves in the game, while Cameryn Stanfield recorded 1 save for Madison. 

Up next, McGraw will host Fabius-Pompey at the McGraw Bennett St Field this Friday (September 8th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Boys Soccer: Homer vs. Westhill

The Homer Trojans fell to an overall record of 2-1 after losing with a final score of 0-8 against Westhill on the road Tuesday night. 

Westhill’s goals were scored by Eric Holstein (2 goals), Luke Infanti (2 goals), Hasan Altheblah (1 goal), Owen Etoll (1 goal), and Maxwell Cowin (1 goal). 

Homer is now scheduled to play on the road against Solvay on Thursday (September 7th) at 5:30pm.  

Varsity Volleyball: Homer vs. Phoenix

The Homer Lady Trojans dominated Phoenix in three straight sets at Homer high school to improve to an overall record of 2-1 Tuesday night.

Homer’s next match will be played on the road against Solvay on Monday (September 11th) at 6pm.  

Varsity Volleyball: Cortland vs. Marcellus

The Cortland Lady Purple Tigers lost in three sets against Marcellus on the road Tuesday night. With this loss, Cortland has fallen to an 0-2 record. 

Cortland was led by Rileigh Madden (3 kills & 11 digs), Katie Harris (5 digs & 9 assists), and Alizabeth West (2 kills, 8 digs & 3 aces). 

Marcellus was led by Chloe Kuttruff (2 digs, 12 assists & 4 aces) and Brynnly Goldsworthy (10 digs, 3 assists & 4 aces). 

Cortland will look to get their first win of the regular season as they host Mexico at Cortland high school on Monday (September 11th) at 6:30pm. 

Varsity Girls Tennis: Homer vs. Marcellus

The Homer varsity girls tennis team lost to Marcellus with a team result of 2-5 Tuesday evening. 

This was Homer’s first regular season match of the season. 

Here are the results from each of yesterday’s matches:

  • 1st Singles: Homer’s Mackenzie Skodzinsky lost to Marcellus’ Shaelyn Kelly (3-6 & 1-6) 
  • 2nd Singles: Homer’s Ginny Park defeated Marcellus’ Xian Angotti (6-4, 3-6 & 7-6)
  • 3rd Singles: Homer’s Georgia Wallis beat Marcellus’ Sophie Clarke (6-3 & 6-0)
  • 1st Doubles:Homer’s  Lauren Franco & Emma Effinger lost to Marcellus’ Sofia Tufenkjian & Korinne Kemp (6-4, 2-6 & 6-7)
  • 2nd Doubles: Homer’s Nina Svereika & Isabelle Brown lost to Marcellus’ Katie Devereaux & Abby Finn (1-6 & 2-6)
  • 3rd Doubles: Homer’s Sunny Park & Elizabeth McCloy lost to Marcellus’ Molly Moses & Ella Lutwin (3-6 & 2-6)
  • 4th Doubles: Homer’s Lucy Goodwin & Mackenzie Lyman lost to Marcellus’ Zofia Polkowski & Caitlyn Sammon (1-6 & 1-6)

Varsity Field Hockey: Cortland vs. Cato-Meridian

The Cortland Field Hockey team lost 0-4 against Cato-Meridian at home on Tuesday. With this loss, Cortland has fallen to an overall record of 0-2. 

Cato-Meridian was led by Ashley Watchorn (2 goals), Camryn Daggett (2 goals), and Aubrey Watchorn (3 saves). 

Cortland was led by Liz Slavick (12 saves) and Abby Clary (7 saves). 

Cortland’s next game will be a Cortland County rivalry game against Homer at Cortland high school on Friday (September 8th) at 6:30pm.
