Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (September 15th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Friday’s events:

Varsity Girls Soccer: Cortland vs. Homer

The Cortland Lady Tigers defeated the Homer Lady Trojans in a county rivalry game at Cortland high school Friday night under the lights. Cortland won the game with a score of 2-0. 

With this result, Cortland improved to an overall record of 2-3, while Homer fell to 2-2. 

Both of Cortland’s goals were scored by senior Maude Terwilliger. 

Up next, Cortland will host Phoenix on Monday (September 18th) at 7pm; while Homer hosts Hannibal on Tuesday (September 19th) at 6:30pm. 

Varsity Girls Soccer: Cincinnatus vs. Otselic Valley

The Cincinnatus Lady Lions improved their unbeaten record to 7-0 after beating Otselic Valley at home Friday evening with a score of 7-1. 

Cincinnatus was led by Cassia Schuyler (2 goals & 1 assist), Mandi Waltz (1 goal & 2 assists), Jocelyn Turshman (2 goals), Madelyn Pittsley (1 goal), Isabella Cosimo (1 goal), Peyton Stith (1 assist), and Sidney Glover  (1 save). 

Otselic Valley was led by Rachel Loomis (1 goal) and Carlie Golden (4 saves). 

Cincinnatus’ next game will be played at home against Madison on Thursday (September 21st) at 4:30pm.  

Varsity Girls Soccer: Marathon vs. Groton

The Marathon Lady Olympians won 1-0 against Groton at Marathon high school. With this win, Marathon improved to a 5-3 record. 

The only goal of the game was scored in the first half by Marathon senior Marissa Allen (assisted by Abigail Ensign). 

Marathon is now scheduled to play on the road against Southern Cayuga on Tuesday (September 19th) at 4:30pm.

Varsity Boys Soccer: Cincinnatus vs. DeRuyter

The Cincinnatus Lions defeated DeRuyter 1-0 on the road to improve to a 4-1-1 overall record Friday afternoon. 

Cincinnatus’ winning goal was scored by Garrett Lieb off an assist from Trevor Shevalier in the first half of the game. 

Up next, Cincinnatus will host Edmeston on Monday (September 18th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Boys Soccer: Marathon vs. SS Seward Institute

The Marathon Olympians beat SS Seward Institute in the final round of the Margaretville boys soccer tournament Friday night. Marathon won with a final score of 6-0. 

With this win, Marathon now holds an unbeaten record of 5-0. 

Marathon was led by Bryce Hartman (2 goals), Jacob Byron (2 goals), Bode Carter (1 goal), Barrett Trabucco (1 goal), Austin Poth (2 assists), Aidan Courtney (1 assist), and Daniel Merihew (1 save).

Marathon’s next game is scheduled to be played on the road against Southern Cayuga on Monday (September 18th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Field Hockey: Homer vs. Owego Apalachin

The Homer Lady Trojans fell 2-0 against Owego Apalachin Friday evening. With this loss, Homer now holds a 2-5 overall record. 

Homer goalie Aislynn Cobb recorded 14 saves in the game. 

Owego Apalachin’s goals were scored by Madison McEvoy and Mackenzie Comparetta. 

Up next, Homer will play on the road against Cato-Meridian on Wednesday (September 20th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Girls Tennis: Homer vs. Mexico

The Homer varsity girls tennis team lost to Mexico with a team result of 3-4 Friday evening. 

Here are the results from each of yesterday’s matches:

  • First Singles: Mackenzie Skodzinsky (Homer) lost to Jessica Hill (Mexico) - (6-3), (1-6) & (4-6)
  • Second Singles: Ginny Park (Homer) defeated Morgan Benton (Mexico) - (6-1) & (6-4)
  • Third Singles: Georgia Wallis (Homer) defeated Olivia Bartel (Mexico) - (6-0) & (6-0)
  • First Doubles: Lauren Franco & Emma Effinger (Homer) defeated Avery Mack & Ella Blunt (Mexico) - (4-6), (6-3) & (6-3)
  • Second Doubles: Isabelle Brown & Nina Svereika (Homer) lost to Zoe Grzesik & Isabella Ponzi (Mexico) - (0-6) & (0-6)
  • Third Doubles: Sunny Park & Elizabeth McCloy (Homer) lost to Kinzy Laffan & Abigail Roberts (Mexico) - (6-7) & (2-6)
  • Fourth Doubles: Mackenzie Lyman & Lucy Goodwin (Homer) lost to Nataleigh Smith & Gabriella Bickford (Mexico) - (1-6) & (6-7)

Varsity Golf: Homer vs. Mexico

The Homer Trojans defeated Mexico with a close team score of 225-229 Friday evening. (Reminder: lowest score in golf wins).
