Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (September 21st)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Thursday’s events:

Varsity Girls Volleyball: Cortland vs. Phoenix

The Cortland Lady Tigers won  in four close sets against Phoenix Thursday night. With this win, Cortland improved to a 4-3 overall record. 

Cortland was led by Katie Harris (1 kill, 14 digs, 25 assists & 5 aces), Alizabeth West (12 kills, 16 digs & 4 aces), Brenna Hogan (1 kill, 2 blocks, 12 digs, 1 assist & 2 aces), and Rileigh Madden (6 kills, 9 digs, 2 assists & 1 ace). 

Phoenix was led by Margo Pritting (7 kills, 2 blocks & 21 digs), Olivia Edwards (3 kills, 7 digs, 22 assists & 5 aces), and Miley Esposito (10 kills, 18 digs & 4 aces).  

Cortland’s next game will be played on the road against Solvay this upcoming Monday (September 25th) at 6pm. 

Varsity Girls Soccer: Cincinnatus vs. Madison

The Cincinnatus Lady Lions improved their unbeaten record to an 8-0 record after beating Madison 8-0 at home Thursday evening. 

Cincinnatus was led by Ava Larrabee (3 goals & 1 assist), Jocelyn Turshman (2 goals & 1 assist), Lucy Finch (1 goal & 1 assist), Mandi Waltz (1 goal & 1 assist), Peyton Stith (2 assists), Cassia Schuyler (1 goal), and Payton Gerrard (1 assist). 

Cincinnatus will now look forward to playing their county rival McGraw at their annual game at SUNY Cortland this Saturday (September 23rd) at 7pm. 

Varsity Girls Soccer: McGraw vs. Otselic Valley

The McGraw Lady Eagles lost a tough game against Otselic Valley with a score of 0-4 on Thursday. With this loss, McGraw has fallen to an overall record of 3-5. 

Otselic Valley’s goals were scored by Rachel Loomis (3 goals) and Kimmy Miron (1 goal). 

McGraw goalkeeper Heather Magee recorded a total of 10 saves in the game. 

Up next, McGraw will play their county rival Cincinnatus at their annual game at SUNY Cortland this Saturday (September 23rd) at 7pm. 

Varsity Girls Soccer: Marathon vs. Dryden

The Marathon Lady Olympians fell to a 5-4-1 record after losing a road game to Dryden Thursday evening with a score of 0-2. 

Dryden’s goals were scored by Dalia Bosworth (1 goal) and Emma Lobdell (1 goal). 

Marathon will look to bounce back on Monday (September 25th) as they play Cortland at Cortland high school under the lights. The game is scheduled to kick off at 7pm. 

Varsity Boys Soccer: Marathon vs. Lansing

The Marathon Olympians won 2-0 at home against Lansing in order to improve to a 6-1 record. 

Marathon was led by Bryce Hartman (1 goal), Bode Carter (1 goal), Brittan Keller (1 assist), and Daniel Merihew (1 save).  

Marathon’s next game will be played on the road against Union Springs this Saturday (September 23rd) at 11am. 

Varsity Golf: Homer vs. Marcellus

The Homer Trojans won 219-224 against Marcellus at the Cortland Country Club on Thursday. (Reminder: lowest score in golf wins).
