Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (September 29th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Friday events:

Varsity Football: Homer vs. Westhill

The Homer Trojans won 40-28 at Westhill Friday night. With this win, Homer improved to an overall record of 2-2. 

Homer’s points were scored by Alexander Votra (5 rushing touchdowns), Brycen Poole (2 two-point conversions), Zane Mitchell (two-point conversion), and Laramy Velasquez-Ramirez (1 field goal & 1 extra point kick). 

Note: Westhill’s stats were not made available by the time this article was written. 

Homer’s next game will be played at Homer high school against Indian River on Friday (October 6th) at 7pm. 

Varsity Football: Cortland vs. Ithaca

The Cortland Purple Tigers lost a close game against Ithaca with a score of 14-27 on the road, bringing their overall record down to 1-4. 

Cortland’s points were scored by Daniel Jackson (2 touchdown receptions), Robert Atkins (2 touchdown passes), and Jaxson Gambitta (2 extra point kicks). 

Ithaca’s points were scored by Daniel Parker (2 touchdown receptions & 1 interception return touchdown), Kaleb Kerfoot (2 touchdown passes), Delvin Christ (interception return touchdown), and Noah Butler (3 extra point kicks). 

Up next, Cortland is scheduled to host Oswego at Cortland high school on Friday (October 6th) at 6:30pm. 

Varsity Girls Soccer: Cortland vs. Marcellus

The Cortland Lady Tigers fell to an overall record of 5-7 after losing to Marcellus Friday evening with a score of 1-5. 

Cortland was led by Quinn Dodds (1 goal), Mackenna Bulger (1 assist), Lauren Mott (12 saves), and Danica Peck (3 saves). 

Marcellus was led by Cece Powell (3 goals), Alie Kaup (1 goal & 1 assist), Claire Card (1 goal), Jadyn Baker (1 assist), Corrine Aldrich (1 assist), and Olivia Smolen (5 saves). 

Cortland is now scheduled to play against Westhill on the road this Tuesday (October 3rd) at 7pm. 

Varsity Girls Soccer: Cincinnatus vs. Christian Brothers Academy (CBA)

The No. 3 Class D state ranked Cincinnatus Lady Lions tied 0-0 against Christian Brothers Academy on Friday. 

This was Cincinnatus first game of the season, where they did not come up with a win. 

With this result, Cincinnatus now holds a 10-0-1 record. 

Cincinnatus' next game will be played on the road against DeRuyter on Monday (October 3rd) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Girls Soccer: Marathon vs. Moravia

The Marathon Lady Olympians shutout Moravia 5-0 in order to improve to an overall record of 7-5-1. 

Marathon was led by Marissa Allen (2 goals), Kennedy Eaton (1 goal & 1 assist), Anna Hoyt (1 goal & 1 assist), Abigail Ensign (1 goal), and Addison Oram (1 assist).

Marathon is scheduled to play on the road against Groton at Groton high school on Tuesday (October 3rd) at 7pm. 

Varsity Boys Soccer: McGraw vs. DeRuyter

The McGraw Eagles lost 1-2 against DeRuyter Friday evening, making them fall to an overall record of 5-4-1.

Varsity Boys Soccer: Cincinnatus vs. Red Creek

The Cincinnatus Lions lost on the road with a score of 1-3 against Red Creek Friday evening. With this loss, Cincinnatus has fallen to an 8-3-1 record. 

Cincinnatus was led by Canden Stafford (1 goal) and John Schuyler (1 assist).

Cincinnatus’ next game will be a county matchup against Marathon on Tuesday (October 3rd). The game is scheduled to be played at the Cincinnatus Fireman's Field at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Field Hockey: Cortland vs. Cato-Meridian

The Cortland Lady Tigers fell to a 0-8 record after losing to Cato-Meridian with a score of 0-3. 

Cortland goalie Abby Clay made a total of 3 saves in the game. 

Cato-Meridian was led by Sophia Kelley (1 goal), Carmella Weatherstone (1 goal), Emma Watkins-DeVall (1 goal), McKenna Morsdorf  (3 saves), and Aubrey Watchorn (2 saves). 

Cortland is now scheduled to play a road game against Auburn on Monday (October 2nd) at 7:30pm.

Varsity Girls Volleyball: Homer vs. LaFayette

The Homer Lady Trojans lost in three straight sets on the road against LaFayette Friday night. With this loss, Homer has fallen to an overall record of 6-4. 

Homer was led by Mackenzie Hubbard (5 kills, 8 digs, 14 assists & 4 aces) and Lilly Sorenson (10 kills, 5 digs, 2 assists & 2 aces). 

LaFayette was led by Chylure Bucktooth (2 kills, 1 block, 6 digs, 22 assists & 3 aces) and Aubrie Jones (11 kills, 1 block, 6 digs & 1 ace). 

Up next, Homer will play Mexico at Mexico high school on Tuesday (October 3rd) at 6pm.
