Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (October 3rd)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Tuesday’s events:

Varsity Field Hockey: Homer vs. Cortland

The Homer Lady Trojans defeated Cortland in their second rivalry game of the season Tuesday night. Homer won with a score of 7-0. 

With this result, Homer improved to a 5-7 record, while Cortland fell to 0-10. 

Homer was led by Mallory Kline (4 goals), Ava Armstrong (2 goals), Brylee Darnell (2 assists), Molly McMasters (1 goal), Gabreann Lamson (1 assist), and Aislynn Cobb (7 saves).  

Cortland goalie Liz Slavick made 7 saves in the game. 

Up next, Homer will play on the road against Port Byron this Thursday (October 5th) at 6pm. On the other hand, Cortland will play a road game against Weedsport on Thursday (October 5th) at 6pm. 

Varsity Boys Soccer: Marathon vs. Cincinnatus

The Marathon Olympians played a Cortland county matchup against the Cincinnatus Lions Tuesday evening at the Fireman’s Field in Cincinnatus. Marathon won the game with a score of 2-0.

Marathon’s next game is scheduled to be played on the road against Moravia Central this Thursday (October 5th) at 4:30pm. Cincinnatus will look to bounce back when they host county rival McGraw at the Fireman’s Field in Cincinnatus on Friday (October 6th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Boys Soccer: McGraw vs. Stockbridge Valley

The McGraw Eagles lost a close game against Stockbridge Valley with a score of 0-1, making them fall to an overall record of 6-5-1. 

The only goal of the game was scored by Stockbridge Valley senior Jack Cross off a penalty kick in the second half. 

McGraw’s next game will be a county rivalry game against Cincinnatus on the road this Friday (October 6th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Boys Soccer: Cortland vs. Westhill

The Cortland Purple Tigers fell to an overall record of 6-7 after losing to Westhill with a score of 0-5 Tuesday evening. 

Westhill’s goals were scored by Timothy Cowin (2 goals), Luke Infanti (1 goal), Maxwell Cowin (1 goal), and Joshua Dabbiero (1 goal). 

Cortland goalkeeper Liam Burns made 12 saves in the game, while Thomas Hunt and Charlie DeMore combined to make 4 saves for Westill. 

Up next, Cortland will play county rival Homer at Cortland junior-senior high school on Thursday (October 5th) at 6:30pm. 

Varsity Girls Soccer: Marathon vs. Groton

The Marathon Lady Olympians won 2-0 against Groton in order to improve to an 8-5-1 record. 

Marathon’s goals were scored by Marissa Allen (1 goal) and Anna Hoyt (1 goal) in the second half. 

Marathon is now scheduled to host Southern Cayuga at Marathon high school on Thursday (October 5th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Girls Soccer: Homer vs. Auburn

The Homer Lady Trojans improved to a 5-6-1 record after defeating Auburn with a close score of 2-1 Monday evening. 

Homer was led by Reese Kline (1 goal), Khloie Young (1 goal), Mikayla Smith (1 assist), Kennadie Taylor (1 assist), and Alex Kellaway (10 saves). 

Note: Auburn’s stats were not made available by the time this article was written. 

Homer is now scheduled to host county rival Cortland at Homer high school on Thursday (October 5th) at 7pm. 

Varsity Girls Soccer: Cortland vs. Westhill

The Cortland Lady Tigers lost 0-3 against Westhill on the road Monday evening. With this loss, Cortland has fallen to an overall record of 5-8. 

Westhill was led by Elle Herrera (2 goals), Hannah Goodness (1 goal & 2 assists), Ava Antoine (2 saves), and Taylor Falcone (1 save). 

Cortland goalkeeper Lauren Mott made 10 saves in the game. 

Cortland will look to bounce back as they play a county rivalry game on the road against Homer at Homer high school on Thursday (October 5th) at 7pm. 

Varsity Volleyball: Homer vs. Mexico

The Homer Lady Trojans defeated Mexico on the road in three straight sets Monday night in order to improve to a 7-4 record. 

Homer was led by Lilly Sorenson (5 kills, 2 blocks, 5 digs & 7 aces), Mackenzie Hubbard (1 kills, 5 digs & 10 aces), and Dannica Smith (4 digs & 12 assists). 

Mexico was led by Kaylee Halsey (1 kill, 2 blocks, 4 digs, 5 assists & 1 ace) and Adriana DiManto (1 kill, 7 digs & 1 assist). 

Homer’s next match will be played at home against Skaneateles on Thursday (October 5th) at 6pm.

Cortland was led by Rileigh Madden (2 kills & 11 digs), Katie Harris (5 digs & 7 assists), and Natalee Kressler (11 digs)

Westhill was led by Ava Baty (2 kills, 3 digs, 15 assists & 1 ace), Alice Bender (12 digs, 1 assist & 1 ace), and Eva Tarolli (10 kills & 1 block). 

Up next, Cortland will play on the road against Mexico on Tuesday (October 10th) at 7pm. 

Varsity Cross Country: Marathon vs. Multiple Teams (IAC Division II North Meet)

The Marathon Olympians competed in the IAC Division II North Meet at Groton high school on Tuesday.

A total of 51 runners competed in the boys’ race, while a total of 24 runners competed in the girls’ race. 

Here are some highlights from both Marathon boys’ and girls’ teams:

Marathon Boys

  • Andrew Edsall finished 3rd overall (Time - 18:02.6)
  • Zachary Birdsall placed 8th overall (Time - 18:58.4)
  • Blake Birdsall came in 21st place overall (Time - 20:43.3)
  • Abdu Romdhani placed 46th overall (Time - 27:23.0)
  • Zander Potts came in 50th place overall (Time - 32:19.5)

Marathon Girls

  • Abigail Trabucco finished 8th overall (Time - 23:49.3)
  • Larina Cochran placed 18th overall (Time - 28:28.4)
  • Hannah Prestigiacomo placed 22nd overall (Time - 30:45.3)
