Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (October 5th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Thursday’s events:

Varsity Girls Soccer: Homer vs. Cortland

The Homer Lady Trojans tied 1-1 against county rival Cortland Lady Tigers at Homer high school Thursday night. 

With this result, Homer now holds a 5-6-2 record, while Cortland now holds a 5-8-1 record. 

Homer was led by Reese Evangelista (1 goal), Kennadie Taylor (1 assist), and Alex Kellaway (10 saves). 

Cortland was led by Quinn Dodds (1 goal) and Lauren Mott (8 saves).

Up next, Homer will play a road game against Chittenango on Tuesday (October 10th) at 7pm; while Cortland hosts Mexico at Cortland junior-senior high school on Tuesday (October 10th) at 7pm.

The Marathon Lady Olympians clinched the IAC North Small School Division after defeating Southern Cayuga in a double-overtime thriller 1-0 Thursday evening.

Marathon is now scheduled to play in the IAC Small School Championship on Saturday (October 14th). The game will be played at Tompkins Cortland Community College at 6pm.

The Cortland Purple Tigers had a successful senior night against county rival Homer Thursday night. Cortland won the game with a score of 3-0.

Cortland will now look forward to playing against Mexico on the road this upcoming Tuesday (October 10th) at 5:30pm. 

Homer will host Chittenango at Homer high school on Tuesday (October 10th) at 7pm. 

Varsity Boys Soccer: Marathon vs. Moravia

The Marathon Olympians won 3-2 on the road against Moravia in overtime Thursday evening. With this win, Marathon improved to a 13-1-1 record. 

This was Marathon’s last game of the regular season. 

Moravia’s goals were scored by Kaiden Sharpsteen and Jacob Anderson in the first half of the game. 

Marathon was then able to tie the game 2-2 after scoring two goals of their own in the second half. Both of Marathon’s second half goals were scored by Bryce Hartman. One of Hartman’s goals was assisted by Bode Carter. 

Marathon’s winning goal was scored by Aydan Brown, assisted by a Camdyn Kashuba off a cross.  

Marathon will now wait to see where they will be seeded in the Section IV Class D playoff tournament. 

Varsity Field Hockey: Cortland vs. Weedsport

The Cortland Lady Tigers fell to an 0-11 record after losing to Weedsport with a score of 0-4. 

Cortland goalkeepers Abby Clay and Liz Slavick combined to make 7 saves in the game. Clay made 5 saves and Slavick made 2 saves. 

Weedsport’s goals were scored by Kayla Flask (2 goals), Daisy Milton (1 goal), and Gabriella Jeffers (1 goal). 

According to Cortland's athletic calendar, the Lady Tigers are now scheduled to host Cazenovia on Wednesday (October 11th) at 6:45pm. 

Varsity Field Hockey: Homer vs. Port Byron

The Homer Lady Trojans lost a close game in overtime against Port Byron Thursday night. With this loss, Homer has fallen to an overall record of 5-8. 

Homer was led by Molly McMasters (1 goal & 2 assists), Brylee Darnell (1 goal), Mallory Kline (1 goal), and Aislynn Cobb (9 saves). 

All four of Port Byron’s goals were scored by Abby McKay. 

Homer will look to bounce back from this tough loss on Saturday (October 7th), as they play Cazenovia at Homer high school at 11:30am. 

Varsity Girls Volleyball: Homer vs. Skaneateles

The Homer Lady Trojans fell to an overall record of 7-5 after losing to Skaneateles in four sets. 

Homer was led by Mackenzie Hubbard (10 kills, 10 digs, 10 assists & 1 ace), Lilly Sorenson (15 kills, 5 digs, 8 assists & 1 ace), and Mallory Douglass (7 assists & 1 dig). 

Skaneateles was led by Ayla Pas'cal (17 kills, 4 blocks, 3 digs, 2 assists & 1 ace) and Delaney Fish (3 digs, 16 assists & 2 aces). 

Up next, Homer will play on the road against Auburn tonight (Friday, October 6th) at 6:30pm.
