Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (October 18th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Wednesday’s events:

Varsity Field Hockey: Homer vs. Mount Markham (1st round of sectionals)

The 6th-seeded Homer Lady Trojans lost to 3rd-seed Mount Markham in the first round of the Section III Class C playoff tournament Wednesday night. 

The game was played at Mount Markham high school. 

Mount Markham’s goals were scored by Kacie Owen (1 goal), Stephanie Delaney (1 goal), Lexi Wolfe (1 goal), and Rebecca McClave (1 goal). 

Homer goalie Aislynn Cobb recorded 10 saves in the game, while Ayva Kantor made 1 save for Mount Markham. 

With this loss, Homer ended their season with an overall record of 6-11. 

Varsity Girls Soccer: Marathon vs. Oxford Academy (1st round of sectionals)

The 6th-seeded Marathon Lady Olympians defeated 11th-seed Oxford Academy in the first round of the Section IV Class C playoff tournament following a penalty shootout.

According to Section IV, Marathon is scheduled to play the quarterfinal round of sectional play against 3rd-seed Southern Cayuga at Southern Cayuga high school on Saturday (October 21st) at 3:30pm. 

Varsity Boys Soccer: Cincinnatus vs. McGraw (1st round of sectionals)

The 4th-seeded Cincinnatus Lions beat county rival McGraw, who were the 13th-seed in the first round of the Section III Class D playoff tournament.

Cincinnatus will host the quarterfinal round of the sectional tournament against 5th-seed Manlius Pebble Hill (MPH) at the Fireman's Field in Cincinnatus this Friday (October 20th) at 3pm. (Note: the start time of the game is subject to change).

Varsity Girls Volleyball: Homer vs. Cortland

The Homer Lady Trojans defeated their county rival Cortland Lady Tigers in three straight sets at Homer high school Wednesday night. 

Homer was led by Lilly Sorenson (14 kills, 6 digs, 6 assists & 2 aces), Mackenzie Hubbard (7 kills, 8 digs, 10 assists & 1 ace), Mallory Douglass (12 digs, 3 assists & 6 aces), and Samantha Sovocool (2 kills, 1 block & 12 digs). 

Cortland was led by Rileigh Madden (9 kills & 10 digs), Katie Harris (8 digs & 18 assists), and Brenna Hogan (6 kills & 4 digs). 

This was both team’s last regular match of the season. 

With this result, Homer ended the regular season with an overall record of 9-7, while Cortland ended the regular season with a 6-9 record. 

According to Section III, there will be a sectional tournament seeding meeting on Sunday (October 22nd, 2023). 

Varsity Cross Country: Cortland vs. Homer

The Cortland Purple Tigers hosted the Homer Trojans at Cortland junior-senior high school to compete in a dual meet Wednesday afternoon. 

The Homer girls team beat Cortland 15-50, while the Homer boys team defeated Cortland 24-31. (Reminder: lowest score in cross country wins)

Here are some highlights from the Cortland & Homer boys’ and girls’ teams:

  • Christian VanPatten came in 3rd place (Time - 21:28)
  • Feodor Kalytyuk placed 4th overall (Time - 21:34)
  • Thomas Barnes finished in 6th place (Time 21:45)
  • Avery Canzano came in 8th place (Time - 22:02)
  • Dylan Slater placed 10th overall (Time - 23:26)

Homer

  • Damian Brown finished in 1st place (Time - 20:02)
  • Christopher Boylan placed 2nd overall (Time - 20:30)
  • Ethan Maslin came in 5th place (Time - 21:35)
  • Aaron O'Brien placed 7th overall (Time 21:53)
  • Liam O'Brien finished in 9th place (Time - 22:03) 

Girls

Cortland

  • Ruby Mullally placed 3rd overall (Time - 24:46.59)

Homer

  • Ingrid Aagaard finished in 1st place (Time 21:14.21)
  • Anna Aldrich came in 2nd place (Time - 24:21.12)
  • Alyssa Swayze placed 4th overall (Time - 25:13.59)
  • Maggie Mahunik placed 5th overall (Time - 25:37.81)
  • Lydia Andre came in 6th place (Time - 25:57.65)
