Cincinnatus Lady Lions advance to sectional semifinals after beating Sackets Harbor (photos included)

Cincinnatus girls soccer team beats Sackets Harbor in the quarterfinal round of the Section III Class D sectional tournament. (photos provided by Timothy A. Bennett, Owner & Publisher of The Cortland Voice).

The top-seeded Cincinnatus Lady Lions defeated 9th-seed Sackets Harbor in the quarterfinal round of the Section III Class D playoff tournament. The game was played at the Cincinnatus Fireman’s Field on Saturday (October 21st). 

According to the latest state rankings, Cincinnatus is also ranked 6th in Class D.

Cincinnatus ended up winning the game with a score of 7-1 after a dominating performance. 

The Lady Lions already had a 3-0 lead at halftime. 

Cincinnatus’s defense didn’t leave much space for Sackets Harbor to do much on offense throughout the game. 

Cincinnatus went on to outscore Sackets Harbor 4-1 in the second half to come up with the win. 

“I think the girls came together,” said Cincinnatus head coach Lisa Sustad. “They did a really good job at possessing the ball and we played really well as a team.”

The Lady Lions were led by Cassia Schuyler (3 goals & 2 assists), Mandi Waltz (2 goals), Payton Landers (1 goal), Ava Larrabee (1 goal), Jocelyn Turshman (1 assist), Neveah Billings (1 assist), and Sidney Glover (1 save). 

Sackets Harbor was led by Peyton Britton (1 goal), Emily Curley (1 assist), and Lilly Green (20 saves).

With this win, Cincinnatus moves on to the semifinal round of the sectional tournament. 

When asked about how the team will prepare for the upcoming game, Cincinnatus senior captain Peyton Stith said, “Last year we did go very far. It’s honestly a mental game. We’re just going to mentally prepare and work as a team. We know we can do it.”

“It is important to stay focused, but also to have fun,” added Cincinnatus junior captain Cassia Schuyler. “It’s a school sport. Everyone came to play because they like the sport and want to have fun, but we also have to be serious, and I think we just have to find an even space between that.”

According to Section III, Cincinnatus will play 4th-seed Copenhagen in the sectional semifinals at Nottingham High School (neutral field) on Wednesday (October 25th). The game is scheduled to kickoff at 5:30pm. (Note: The start time of the game is subject to change).
