Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (September 26th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Tuesday’s events:

Varsity Girls Soccer: Marathon vs. Union Springs

The Marathon Lady Olympians defeated Union Springs 5-1 at home in order to improve to a 6-5-1 overall record. 

Marathon was led by Anna Hoyt (4 goals), Abigail Ensign (2 assists), Marissa Allen (1 goal), Kennedy Eaton (1 assist), Megan Howard (1 assist), and Megan Stewart (1 assist). 

Union Springs’ only goal of the game was scored by Lilly Casler. 

Marathon’s next game will be played at home this Friday (September 29th) against Moravia at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Boys Soccer: Cincinnatus vs. Otselic Valley

The Cincinnatus Lions won 2-0 against Otselic Valley, bringing their overall record up to 8-2-1 Tuesday evening. 

Cincinnatus was led by Jack Stafford (2 goals), John Schuyler (1 assist), and Canden Stafford (1 assist). 

Cincinnatus’ next game will be played on the road against Red Creek this Friday (September 29th) at 7pm. 

Varsity Boys Soccer: Marathon vs. Groton

The Marathon Olympians improved to a 9-1 record after beating Groton with a score of 8-0 at Groton high school. 

Marathon was led by  Brittan Keller (2 goals & 2 assists), Bryce Hartman (2 goals & 1 assist), Aydan Brown (1 goal & 2 assists), Colton Oram (1 goal), Colton Howe (1 goal), Camdyn Kashuba (1 goal), Robert Anderson (1 assist), Aidan Courtney (1 assist), and Bode Carter (1 assist).  

Marathon is now scheduled to host Southern Cayuga at Marathon high school on Thursday (September 28th) at 4:30pm.

The Marathon Lady Olympians shutout Tioga with a final score of 5-0 in order to improve to an 8-2 record.

The Lady Olympians will now look forward to playing on the road against Owego Free Academy on Thursday (September 28th) at 4pm. 

Varsity Field Hockey: Homer vs. Morrisville-Eaton

The Homer Lady Trojans lost a close game to Morrisville-Eaton with a score of 0-1. With this loss, Homer has fallen to an overall record of 4-6.

Homer will now play Weedsport at Weedsport high school this Thursday (September 28th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Volleyball: Cortland vs. Cazenovia

The Cortland Lady Tigers lost in four sets at home against Cazenovia Tuesday night. With this loss, Cortland now holds a 5-4 record. 

Cortland was led by Morgan Howrad (14 digs, 15 assists & 1 ace), Leah Seyfried (2 kills, 2 blocks & 11 digs), Rileigh Madden (4 kills, 10 digs & 2 aces), Brenna Hogan (3 kills, 12 digs, 1 assist & 2 aces), Alizabeth West (2 kills & 12 digs), and Nellie Lucas (8 kills & 1 block).

Cazenovia was led by Olivia Prykl (4 kills, 13 digs, 2 assists & 3 aces), Mya Skeele (4 kills, 11 digs & 1 ace), and Lucy Bliss (2 kills, 15 digs, 7 assists & 3 aces). 

Up next, Cortland will look to bounce back as they prepare to host Skaneateles at Cortland high school on Monday (October 2nd) at 6:30pm.

The Homer Lady Trojans won a tight game against Marcellus after five sets on the road Tuesday night in order to improve to a 6-2 record. 

Homer was led by Mackenzie Hubbard (8 kills, 9 digs & 14 assists), Lilly Sorenson (11 kills, 1 block, 13 digs, 7 assists & 2 aces), Mallory Douglass (16 digs & 2 assists), and Samantha Sovocool (2 kills & 8 digs).

Marcellus was led by Chloe Kuttruff (3 digs & 34 assists), Dorothy McMahon (1 kill, 40 digs & 3 assists), and Brynnly Goldsworthy (8 kills, 16 digs & 1 ace). 

Homer is scheduled to play Westhill this Thursday (September 28th) at Homer high school at 6pm. 

Varsity Golf: Cortland vs. Westhill

The Cortland Purple Tigers lost 229-204 against Westhill at the Willowbrook Golf Club in Cortland. (Reminder: lowest score in golf wins).

Varsity Cross Country: Marathon vs. Multiple Teams (Owego Invitational)

The Marathon Olympians competed in the 2023 IAC Duals at Lansing high school on Tuesday. Each race was 5,000 meters long. 

A total of 30 runners competed in the boys’ race, while a total of 14 runners competed in the girls’ race. 

Here are some highlights from both Marathon boys’ and girls’ teams:

Marathon Boys

  • Andrew Edsall finished in 2nd place overall (Time - 17:11.00)
  • Zachary Birdsall came in 3rd place overall (Time - 17:58.40)
  • Blake Birdsall placed 11th overall (Time - 19:12.20)
  • Zander Potts placed 30th overall (Time - 32:09.40)

Marathon Girls

  • Abigail Trabucco came in 6th place overall (Time - 22:10.10)
  • Larina Cochran finished in 11th place overall (Time - 25:05.80)
  • Hanna Prestigiacomo placed 14th overall (Time - 29:08.80)
